Thornden Titans and Tornadoes

On the 2nd of July, Thornden 10&U teams lead by Tom Flynn (Tornadoes) and Zayan Siddiqui-Raja (Titans) took part in a Hampshire & IOW Youth League summer tournament held down at Portsmouth Tennis Centre.  This was a first tournament for many of our young 10&U players and it was really good to see activate participation and fun being had at all times. Team sheets below….

Thornden Titans

  • Jessica Wang
  • Oscar Wei
  • Aaryan Bhome
  • Arhan Trivedi

Thornden Tornadoes

  • Freya Darrock
  • Charlie Willis
  • Dillon Griffiths
  • Praneeth Koppular

The format of the day consisted of a round robin tournament between 5 teams, including Portsmouth Tennis Centre, Aldershot, and the Avenue along with our 2 Thornden teams. Two matches were played inside, and two matches were played outside for both teams.

The day started off brightly with a Thornden vs Thornden encounter in breezy conditions outside. This was a great way to ease the teams into the competition with some friendly rivalry. Matches were played in good spirit with the children laughing and engaging with the tournament rules. The result ending with a 5-1 win to Thornden Titans with Zayan taking the bragging rights over senior coach Tom.

Matches came thick and fast with lots of good tennis being played and in the right spirit. It was great to see all the Thornden parents and players cheering on both teams.

Match results for the other teams are posted below.

Thornden Titans vs Avenue: 4-2 Win – Thornden

Thornden Titans vs PTC: 5 -1 Win  - Thornden

Thornden Titans vs Aldershot: 6-0 Win – Thornden

Thornden Tornadoes vs Avenue: 4-2 Loss – Avenue

Thornden Tornadoes vs PTC: 5-1 Loss – PTC

Thornden Tornadoes vs Aldershot: 4-2 Loss – Avenue

A special mention to Dillon Griffiths and Praneeth against the avenue for contesting in a nail biter tiebreak in the doubles coming back from 7-2 down to win 10-8!!!

A huge congratulations to Thornden Titans who managed to stay unbeaten for the whole day managing to win the trophy with only 3 matches being lost all day. A great effort from the Thornden Tornadoes to for pushing their opposition all the way to the very end.

Players of the day have to go to Dillon Griffiths from the Thornden Tornadoes for showing outstanding courage and determination after a tough loss and Oscar Wei for the Titans for providing some on court entertainment as always with some brilliant celebrations and tennis being shown.
