It was quite a week meteorologically as we were visited by Diana, the Roman Goddess of the hunt, the moon and birthing. By the weekend we had the remnants of the Storm Diana and that put paid to any tennis on Saturday so we just have the Ladies Belles upon which to report. Photo: Nothing from Tennis so one of my Grandchild.
So first things first: Diana was relevant for me on Monday when my daughter-in-law delivered my first grandchild: a boy, 7lb 13 oz and 50 percentile in all respects – I am told. Cause for celebration indeed. I celebrated on Saturday afternoon by visiting my brother (and wife) in Farnborough and then crossed the border into Surrey to see my eldest sister (and husband). Reason for the outing was I wanted my brother to hand carry Christmas gifts and cards to my sister in Wales, who will be later be visited by my sister from Yorkshire: see we are all over the place - a bit like McDonalds: you are never far away from a Chatterton relation! Also like McDonalds our prices are based upon affordability which is why I don’t get paid for doing these reports. We have deep pockets too: like Scotsmen but without the generosity: short arms though.
Finally managed to prepare and pre-cook my Christmas Puddings this week: no idea what they will be like as found myself short of some ingredients so just used what I had so don’t think I will eat any this year! Leon can take the leftovers to University in January! Sure it will be eaten there.
Tennis related news: not much as it is close season for the professionals so that is the end of that paragraph: had to turn down PTA’s invitation for our Boy’s 12s to be humiliated at theirs this month or next) as we can only raise three players: when the fixture was supposed to be played I had 5, if not 6 players available. So I told them to find a date in February or March. I await the answer with bated breath.
And so we turn to events on Sunday morning at Thornden. The Ladies Belles welcomed Romsey Ladies B team with Captain Christine not playing. Helen Haigh & Jocelyn Kwan started with a 6-2, 6-4 win, Sue Wells & Sam Hennessy sped to a 6-1, 6-1 win but Pam Thompson & Sheena Barker halved 4-6, 6-4. Second round of rubbers had Helen & Jocelyn win 6-2, 6-1, Sue & Sam dominate to win 6-0, 6-0 but Pam & Sheena halve again 6-1, 5-7. Last round Helen & Jocelyn won 6-0, 6-2, Sue & Sam won 6-3, 7-5 and Pam & Sheena won 6-1, 6-2 to seal a dominant 8-1 win. Yep Diana was definitely hunting for us this week!
Next week: Saturday 8th December: Mixed Charmers scheduled at home to Southampton University: Sunday 9th December: Men’s A-TEAM at home to Winchester B.
Title: Paul Anka, 1957: my sister was an avid Paul Anka fan so I had this one drilled into me as a pre-teen. “You’re so young and I’m so old, this Diana I’ve been told, … What can I say: nobody writes lyrics like that anymore - if they did they would end up in jail!
