A bit late but then it is always worth waiting for my view on last week’s action. Juniors playing in the Hampshire & IoW County Championship and our Apsley B Team playing at the weekend.
In the wilds of SO22 ( Winchester Sports & Rackets Club) we had a good assortment of players in the Hampshire & IoW Junior County Championship. Major success was by Martyna Ciubatiuk who won all her matches in the Girl’s 10 & Under Championship to take the trophy. She dropped no sets and only 8 games out of a total of 42! Aleksander Kudla played in the 8 & Under Boy’s singles coming out Group winner having only one loss out of four matches. However he failed to go any further in the knock-out stages. Nishant Talpallikar had a tough time in the 12 & Under main draw where he was knocked out in his first match. In the Consolation he progressed to the semi final after winning at the quarter final stage. He also played in the doubles but after winning the first round was knocked out in the second,Martyna and Anna Vinnell contested the 12 & Under Girl’s where both won their first round matches only to come up against the # 1 & 2 seeds. Magda Kornijczuk & Anna joined up to come third in the 14 & Under Girls doubles Martyna also playing but was unsuccessful in any of her matches. The Boy’s 16 & Under singles had James Blair winning his first round match but losing in Round 2 Mats Colling progressed to the Quarter Final and was the most successful of our Boys wit Harry Dunnett going out in the second round. Harry and Mats won one of their matches in the Boys 16 & under doubles round-robin. In the Boy’s 18 & Under David Darrock reached the Quarter-final, Mats reached the second round as did Harry and James. James then went on to win the consolation round-robin. Harry & Dave reached the semi-finals of the 16 & Under doubles but James and Mat failed to progress from the quarter final stage. Some successes against very strong opposition.
The weekend failed to improve on the week’s activities with our ApsleyB Team was at home to Sandleheath. As Christine Johnston reported “Disappointing loss but they put out a strong team. Long rain stop when lots of food was eaten and tea drunk so really, despite the score, a nice afternoon”. The details – Christine & Steve Johnson lost 1-6, 4-6; Nigel Green & Julie Kelly lost 3-6, 5-7; Alex Billingham & Sue Wells WON 7-5, 6-4; Chris Osborne & Helen Haigh lost 3-6, 4-6. Then Christine & Julie WON a gruelling match 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 and Sue & Helen WON 6-1, 6-2 (clearly the tea and cakes at work here!). Steve & Nigel clearly didn’t have enough doughnuts as they lost 1-6, 0-6 while Alex & Chris put up a good fight in the first set only to lose 6-7, 1-6 too much sugar in their tea one suspects. Not a great day but with the Bank Holiday on Monday two days to mull over the results before workdays loom.
Next weekend there are no matches! Yep, the season is edging towards its conclusion and before long I will e reporting on the Christmas party – if there is one! Weekend after, 12th September there are two Apsley matches, As home to Rivereside A and Bs away, strangely, to Riverside B.
