It’s a game

On Wednesday the Senior Men’s A was meant to be away to Avenue A and Senior Men’s B at home to Riverside. Saturday the Ladies doubles team was home to Warsash, Men’s Bs scheduled to be at home to Ryde. On Sunday the Men’s Cs was at home to Avondale. Photo: Liezl's Wimbledon Cake: no we haven't gone all culinary: she brought it along on Saturday for the match!

So let us start with the non-news. The Senior Men’s A conceded due to lack of players.  The Men’s Bs also had to concede as they did not want Ryde to travel to Thornden to play a reduced team.and the Boy’s 16s match was cancelled as Totally had not played any matches up to now so was effectively out of the league.

Last Sunday we entertained Thornden Tornadoes, Steep Scorpions, Colden Cats and (Colden) Common Comets for the Junior Inter-Club Challenge. As usual we chose not to come first so were very content to come a worthy third behing the Scorpions (always have a sting in their tail), the Comets (with a spectacular tail if you ever manage to see them and well ahead of the Cats who must have been Manx (or even Java by the way) as they seemed to have a very short tail. Lots of fun was enjoyed for most of the players although some were inclined to take it extremely seriously. Our team actually lead after round one but thereafter slowly succumbed to the heat!

The Men’s Senior Bs at home to Riverside on Wednesday found Greg Cheesbrough & Chris Osborne lose 0-6, 2-6 while Nigel Green & Kevin Porter won 6-2, 7-1( well that is what it says on the score-card!). In reverse doubles Greg & Chris lost 3-6, 3-6 and so did Nigel & Kevin but 2-6, 3-6. No doubt I will be corrected about the 7-1 but even the totalling add up to show a 7-1 score! Think it should be 7-6 really but who am I to say: just the general factotum…

The Ladies managed to assemble 4 players to meet Warsash. The following is from Christine Johnson (it looks better in Morse Code by the way): “Could only field 4 ladies, due to other commitments, too hot and football. So lost 6 3 but think it would have been the same result even with 6 players. Their second pair was rather strong. So Warsash immediately 3 up. First round Liezl and Magda beat the 3s (6-1, 6-1). Christine and Janet lost to the 2s (3-6, 0-6). Second round Liezl and Magda lost to the 1s (5-7, 2-6), but Christine and Janet beat the 3s on the championship tie break (1-6, 6-4, 1-0). Third round Liezl and Magda won (6-2, 6-0) and we lost 3-6, 0-6 (but a good battle against a very strong second pair with nothing to lose!). Yummy cake from Liezl to celebrate Wimbledon." I added the scores and did a slight edit.

On Sunday the Men’s Cs was at home to Avondale. It’s the heat I am sure. Steve Thompson & Jon Francis started badly losing 0-6, 2-6, while Chris Osborne & Jason Gauci lost 1-6, 0-6 and Lyndsey Ross plus one lost 1-6, 1-6. Steve & Jon then lost 1-6, 2-6, Chris & Jason lost 0-6, 0-6 and Lyndsey +1 lost 1-6, 0-6. Final round Steve & Jon lost 2-6, 3-6, Chris & Jason lost 0-6, 1-6 and Lyndsey +1 lost 4-6, 4-6. Will add in the +1 once scorecard turns up. Cannot confirm order is right.

So I might just as well tell you some more about the Masala n Music. We look as if we raised a good sum, over £200 on the raffle and somewhere in the region of £300 on ticket sales (after costs). The food was really excellent thanks to Bhumati and Ketan plus the help of Bhumati’s Mum who came down for the occasion. The various plaudits we have received include “You lied to me - you said he was good – he is excellent”, “loved the song-writing and the music composition”, “It was all good”, “Everyone loved it”, “fantastic singing” about Harry), “beautiful playing” (on both Jocelyn and Estella). One said  when he is famous I want a signed vinyl album!. Some said it was run beautifully but I cannot say anything about that cos I know the chaos that was going on inside! For those of you who failed to make the show have a look at the photos on this link https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1k0GYzoBl_NJOBSXTz13uzf2cLwHVirfR and enjoy. Videos of some of the show will be available soon so look out for the link in next week’s report. Next year – if there is one next year – we may try to go for later in the Summer but we will decide later. If you were there please tell others and encourage more people to come along next year. We had about 70 but could have accommodated 120 at a push. Great evening and really great fun. Pity about the MC but what do you expect from me!

Next week: Monday 9th July Senior Men’s Bs away to Avenue C. Saturday 14th July Apsley As at home to Winchester B.

Title:  Bay City Rollers, 1977: in memory of Alan Longmuir (a Roller) who died this week. Just wonder what song title we will have next week!
