Storm Ellen sees Div 1 titles slip away

Saturday brought Thornden  Mixed C v Glebians B! An excellent win for Thornden at home . Helen Haigh and Kevin Porter managed 2 great wins , only dropping 6 games. Sam Henessey and David Dunnett only just missed out on 2 wins , losing  a 3rd set deciding  tie break against the 2s to give a great 3-1 win overall.

On Sunday our under 16 boys travelled to Avenue Tennis Club in Havant . Avenue put out a good team with ratings which didn't represent their ability. Thornden were represented by Ashton Kerslake, James Overton, James Hurlock and Adam Dodds. There were 2 great wins for James Overton and a great win in the doubles for Ashton . All the matches were really close and some great tennis was played.  A narrow 2 - 4 loss but onwards and upwards boys!

Meanwhile at Thornden , James Hurlock's sister was playing for the ladies A team.  This match against top of the table Kingsgate was our chance to take the title . It was touch and go whether it would be played at all with the arrival of yet more wind and rain, but Thornden ladies are a tough bunch. Dita Mezihorakova and Stef Caitlin played a storm (in Storm Ellen) to win 2.5 rubbers including a half against a county pair from Hampshire and Dorset. Frankie and Nakshatra did well to managed 1.5 rubbers while Janet and Estella had their closest match v Kingsate 3rds but couldn't quite capture a win so a 4-5 loss overall and Kingsgate win the league.

Our mens A team faced Storm Ellen and Winchester B away on their fast astro courts. The potential prize was a chance to play Winchester A in a couple of weeks time for the title but only a 9 - 0 win  against their B team would do. Thornden fielded a strong team but Winchester B had their best side out too so it was always going to be a tall order. Thornden's club coach, Paul Scullard and Ben Jubin showed the way with 3 impressive wins for the loss of only 8 games. Dave Darrock and debutant, Loic Armstrong had a close match against the 2nd pair whilst getting used to the fast courts and heavy balls but lost 4 - 6  3 -6. They regrouped to thrash the 3rd pair 6 - 1  6 - 0 and then came up short 2 - 6  4 - 6 against a very strong 1st pair. Mats Colling and Harry Thomas, playing at three, got very close to the 2nd and first pairs losing a tie break on the way but came through 6 - 1 6 - 2 against the 3rds. A respectable 5 - 4 win overall but Winchester A have won the league - second is the best we can hope for.

Meanwhile on the even faster astro of Bassett our Mens C team faced  Bassett D. It was plain sailing all round. Stuart G and Stuart B comfortably won all 3 rubbers as did  Lindsay Ross and Steve Thompson. The only hiccup was a 6 - 3 5 -7 half by Chris Osborne and Jason J playing a two against the Bassett 1st pair. Still, a 8.5  0.5 win was a great result which potentially gives our boys the chance to pip Lyndhurst for promotion to Div 4.
