So this week we have had the Snow’s Thornden Junior Open and had some notable successes. The Mixed 9 & Under was won by Marcin Kornijczuk, the Mixed 10s by Orek Kudla (who is not currently a member), the Boys 12 & Under Singles was won by Sam Ardley, the Boys 12 & Under Doubles by Sam & Ben Hatfield, the Boy’s 14 & Under Singles won by Sam and the Boys 14 & Under Doubles by Sam & Freddie Swain. It was disappointing to see so few entries for a Grade 4 tournament but great to see so many Thornden Tennis Club players taking part.
Along the coast at West Worthing James Ardley and Milan Bharadia had some success in the Sussex Open. James Ardley cruised to a second round match 6-2, 6-0, won an exciting three set quarter-final 1-6, 6-4, 10-4, won his semi-final 6-2, 7-5 but then was a bit crushed to lose 5-7, 1-6 in the final. Milan meanwhile won his second round match 6-2, 6-0, but succumbed in the quarter final 0-6, 0-6. In the Men’s Open James won his first round 6-1, 6-4 but was crushed in the second round by the #1 seed. James Blair had a bye for his first round match but was then had to concede due to injury. Milan won an exciting first round match 6-1, 4-6, 10-6 but was then thumped in his second round by the #3 seed.
And so to Saturday away in Swanmore the Apsley As was sweltering on court. Paul Scullard & Dita Mezihorakova showed no mercy winning 6-0, 6-3, Mats & Summer Colling won 6-4, 6-1, James Blair & Anna Vinnell won 6-1, 6-3 and Alex Billingham & Frankie Colling won 6-3, 6-0. This looks a bit one sided chaps. Summer & Dita won 6-3, 6-0, Anna & Frankie 6-2, 6-0 as Paul & James won 6-1, 6-2 and Mats & Alex determined to beat the heat rushed to a 6-0, 6-0 win. I thought Apsley was meant to be sociable tennis! Really hot was Frankies comment which could apply to the tennis as well as the weather.
