Our Apsley B team were at home to Kingsgate A on Saturday. It was a nice sunny start if a little breezy. After the mixed we were 2 all with wins at 1 and 2 , so everything to play for in the doubles. Our men's 1s won theirs but our 2s lost. Ladies 2 s lost so it was down to ladies 1s to win for a draw overall. Ladies 1s went to 3 sets!! It was a long one and soooo close. Unfortunately Thornden ended up losing the 3rd set 5-7 so Kingsgate ended up with a 5-3 win. Our match went on so long that there were only 4 players left for the photo. We were in appropriate St George's Day's colours - not that this helped us! Representing Thornden were: Alex B, Mark W, Steve J and Paul S, Jackie,Christine ,Janet and Frankie. Alex was man of the match, winning both his matches.
On Sunday both our National League men's teams played - Paul's team in Windsor and Pete's team in Lee on Solent. Paul's team had Paul, Graham Neale, Simon Taylor, Roche and Mats. After singles and doubles we were 3 all so it went to a shoot out . Mats and Paul played 10 point singles tiebreaks which unfortunately they lost . Singles wins were had by Mats and Simon and also the doubles win was by Mats and Simon. The new world tennis number mixes peoples position in the team and we're not sure if it is benefitting us! Paul said that they all had a very enjoyable day of tennis and the opposition were very hospitable and friendly.
Meanwhile Pete's team was at Lee . We had a singles win from Harry T at 4 . Joseph , Milan and Chris B all lost in very close 3rd set 10 point tie breaks. Alex was 5th man and played the doubles with Milan and won. So although we lost 4-2 , if the tie breaks had gone our way we would have won 5-1!! Ah, such is tennis. Alex continued his winning week end. Pete reported that the men/boys all played really well, especially Joseph who played at 1.
