Perfect (or The A Team)

On Monday the Senior Ladies was at home to Waterside Ladies and surprisingly so was the Senior Men’s B team. Then on Saturday the Apsley A team enjoyed the languid trip down the M27 to Lee-on-the-Solent for what must be their final match of the season. I will start with tennis this week which will make a change but it is really the reason I have this opportunity of exercising my literary bent. There are other ways of course but at least this is legal.

If you had popped in to the club on Monday evening you would have found the Senior Ladies hard at it. As Chairperson lady Christine reported: “Julie Kelly & Christine Johnson had a real battle against the Waterside #1s losing the first 4-6 but coming back fighting to win the second 6-2 and then taking the tie break. Sue & Pam had a much more straightforward rubber winning 6-3, 6-4! In the second round and Julie & Christine easily took the first set 6-0, but then things went a bit wrong but they still managed to take it 6-3. Poor Sue & Pam waited ages for their second match against Waterside #1s for their player to get injured in the first game and so was conceded. So a very solid 4-0 win for the ladies. And so to the tea party!”

The Senior Men’s B also entertained Waterside. Steve Johnson &  Chris Osborne had a slow start against the Waterside #1’s but sneaked ahead to 3-2 in the first set before finding their form to run out winners 6-3, 6-0. Greg Cheesbrough & Kevin Porter had a slightly easier match winning with a convincing 6-1, 6-1. In the reverse rubbers, Steve & Chris had another opening wobble  to 2-2 in the first set but then won the remaining games for a convincing 6-2, 6-0 victory. No wobbles for Greg & Kevin against who they thrashed 6-0, 6-0. This completed a 4-0 overall win and confirmed the Senior Men’s B winning Division 4 for the Men's over 45 B team - with a match still to go- and hence a return to Division 3 next season. Beers all round to celebrate and contemplate not yoyoing back down again next season as happened after the previous promotion 2 years ago!”

And so tea: yes, the ladies easily beat the men on that one, especially with Pam's apple cake. It is rumoured that quite a few of the men tried it though although there is no mention of that in their report: too busy with those beers I guess!!

The Apsley A team pottered down to Lee-on-the-Solent on Saturday with probably almost the best team we have. This was to play Lee-on-the-Solent on quite a blustery afternoon but at least it wasn’t raining. Paul Scullard & Dita Mezihorakova started well 6-2 but then dropped the second set 4-6 and the final set 4-6! Tom Perkins & Summer Colling made no mistake winning 6-4, 6-4, Mats Colling & Magda Kornijczuk won 6-4, 6-1 and Frankie Colling & Alex Billingham won 6-2, 6-2. Dita & Summer then had a real tussle but won 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 but Magda & Frankie won a dominant 6-0, 6-0. Tom & Paul battled t a 7-5, 6-3 win and Mats & Alex win a comfortable 6-3, 6-4 to complete a successful afternoon at the seaside.

Interesting week with Federer, Djokovich (and others) falling by the wayside at the Cincinnati Open. They had snow in Australia and kangeroos were filmed cavorting in the snow: “What do you get if you cross a kangaroo with a sheep? Woolly Jumpers of course” (groans). In the UK fox cubs were filmed bouncing on a trampoline in Cardiff while in the USofA a Racoon managed to get trapped in a vending machine. Yep it was A-Level results week again!

Next week: All I have is Saturday 24th August: Apsley B away to Lymington. Sunday 25th Leon C is performing at the Victorious Festival in Southsea. Sure there is more tennis this week but we will see.
