Success for the D Team in the Winter League

Cornwall Winter League 2025/26 – Division 3 West

Truro D vs Penzance F

22 February 2026 | Truro Lawn Tennis Club

After nearly two months of relentless rain, we were finally treated to the first truly glorious day of the year—clear blue skies and sunshine over Truro. With a national match taking place on the acrylic courts, Team D competed on our trusted tarmac surfaces, which played beautifully in the dry conditions.

Nine points ahead of Penzance E and still unaware of their result from the previous day, the message was simple: finish the season strongly. Facing Penzance F—the only team to beat us this winter—added extra motivation.

Men’s Doubles

Boris Baychev and Ross Dawler set the tone with a 6–3, 6–4 win. Both served well throughout. After slipping 1–4 behind in the second set, they raised their level impressively, tightening up from the baseline and closing out five straight games to seal it in straight sets.

Ladies’ Doubles

Sarah Beynon and Jo Temple delivered a very comfortable 6–1, 6–2 victory. Jo played entirely in her trademark style—anchored to the baseline, using deep clever slice, and perfectly judged lobs to control rallies. With Sarah’s consistency and well positioned winners alongside her, they dictated from start to finish.

Mixed 1

Boris and Sarah lost 4–6, 5–7 after a slow start. With Ross and Jo progressing smoothly on the other court, perhaps the edge dropped slightly early on. They competed much better in the second set, which was tight throughout, but credit to the Penzance pair for a strong performance.

Mixed 2

Ross and Jo wrapped things up with a dominant 6–1, 6–0 win. Ross was rock-solid as ever, while Jo continued her disciplined baseline play, absorbing pressure and redirecting the ball with depth and control. Experience showed throughout.

Final Score:

Truro D 8 – 2 Penzance F 🎾
