Summer Newsletter 2021

NEWS FROM UFFINGTON LAWN TENNIS CLUB

Our tennis season is now back in full swing with matches under our belt and a busy coaching schedule underway. Even though we’ve had more than our share of rain this year there have been plenty of long summer evenings for club members to get out on court.

We have an enthusiastic Ladies team who have been promoted to Division 2 and they were under no illusion that this would be a hard summer season.  The team have battled bravely, played some good tennis and are justly proud of their enthusiasm and commitment. There has been one notable win and many close matches resulting in both draws and losses.  We are now halfway through the season and the team is determined to ensure we remain in Division 2 next year.

Our Mixed team has enjoyed a series of tight matches on Thursday evenings in the Swindon & District Summer League. We’ve played six matches against various sides from Pewsey, Marlborough, Swindon, and Royal Wootton Bassett so far with mixed fortunes - winning three and losing three. We currently sit fourth in the table with four more games to play in July before the league ends.

On the coaching front, the junior groups are both taking place on Wednesdays during termtime. These sessions take place from 4-5pm for the primary school children,and between 5-6pm for Years 7 upwards. Both are popular and well attended. Differing abilities are catered for by splitting the group between the Head and assistant coach who rotate during the sessions.

In addition two weeks of junior holiday camps are planned from 2nd August. Please visit https://clubspark.lta.org.uk/gamesetandmatchplay/Coaching/Camps for further information and booking. The weekly adult group session on 'dynamic doubles' (following the Juniors on Wednesdays from 6-7pm) are very popular and all standards are reaping the rewards of attending.

We are extremely fortunate to have a great coaching team led by Paul Butcher - LTA Level 4 coach supporting the club coaching programme. Paul is also available for private sessions on 07779 123867.

Let’s hope the sun shines on the rest of our season and we wish our teams every success in their forthcoming matches. If all goes according to plan with the easing of restrictions we will be holding our popular Annual Tennis Tournament early in the Autumn. In the meantime club nights continue on Fridays at 6pm. Absolutely everyone welcome. Hope to see you on the courts soon.
