Captains Report
Day 1 Warwickshire vs Essex who were seed 1st in the box. Rain delay started the day off slowly but with smart thinking from Simon we managed to get into the bubble and continue to warm up. It started off with George and Sam winning there singles with a very professional performance of sportsmanship and shot selection. 2-0. Dan and Luca up next with Dan losing a well fort battle Luca got the win taking it to 3-1. Then with doubles it was Luca and Sam as 1st pair and dan and George as the 2nd. Luca and Sam won with a comfortable score line. However Dan and George couldn’t make it 5-1 we settled with a 4-2 win over the Essex’s boys
Still on the first day we then had to play north of Scotland. Who had just beaten Surrey so they were buzzing as well, as they got off to a good start. This time it was csongor and Sam who got us off to a 2-0 start with Dan and Luca having to stop the play because of light dan had to stop just before a 3rd set tie break and Luca was 3-3 in the second set after winning the 1st.
Day 2 after another rain delay the boys got off to a slow start but Luca winning and dan losing the 3rd set tie break were found ourselves 3-1 up again. Sticking with the same 4 players Luca and Sam, csongor and dan as the doubles pair things got under way and Luca and Sam got things down making it 4-1 and csongor and dan losing there doubles it became 4-2.
With Warwickshire winning 2 out of 2 and all the others winning 1 we were nearly had one foot in the final. We still had Surrey to play. George and Sam playing at 4 and 3 George continued his great form and played a brilliant net coverage match Sam unfortunately losing made it 1-1. This time it was Dans turn to step up and he did with fine display of counter punching and then Luca doing what his done best at this age group he won easily. 3-1. One more match to win but that was it for Saturdays day of play double had to wait for sunday morning.
Day 3 with the boys having an earlier night they were fresh and ready to go. Luca and Sam as the first pair this time I but George and csongor as the second pair. Luca and Sam winning only just gave George and csongor a bit of freedom to play they lost a closely fort battle. 4-2. We had done it we made it into the final but we had to wait for 2 and half hour to see who we were playing. Leicestershire or devon. Devon it was!
Final time. Sticking with George Sam dan and Luca the boys had to play short sets so they became focused and turned on very quickly. George winning the first set and Sam doing the same things we’re looking very good! Sam continued to produce and had a comfortable result, George had lost the second set. It the went to a 3rd set which George never gave up but losing it. 1-1. Luca and Dan were up. Dan was playing there number 2 seed and with out a doubt had his work cut out for him. The kid was seeing the ball like a beech ball he just didn’t miss and didn’t know how to his the ball softly so he took Dan out, however before that match had finished Luca had upped his level and showed everyone why he’s number one in the country! With a spectacular display it was 2-2.
Doubles time. Luca and Sam and George and Dan, the boys were handling the pressure on the court well with some calls not going there way and with devon parent getting involved Luca and Sam broke, won the first set and then having an up and down second set then eventually won it. But there match was over shadowed by how well George and Dan we’re playing, with there match to be desided by a 3rd set it became 3-3.
Shootout time! With a tough call it had to be Luca and player of the weekend George to play the shootout. The boys getting off to an amazing start going 4-2 thing looked strong! Hitting big and making all the right decisions devon came back and made it 4-4. Going a break down and then breaking back the boys started to up there game again, changed ends 7-5 up. We broke and then Luca held it became 9-6 matchpoint. Luca returning the 1st serve it was underway battling cross court devon net player coming across Luca went back cross and then the biggest cheers went out with the devon player netting the ball parents and played went crazy! We had done it all the hard work and nervous taken in the boys deserved what they had put in 2019 under 14s national champions
