Warwickshire Ladies O40’s v Hertfordshire

On Saturday the ladies played Hertfordshire on home soil at Warwick Tennis Club. The sun was shining for the first match of the season.

Jen Barr and Kirstin Bryce played first and second singles whilst Vikki Goodenough and Saykin Su-Cowling paired up for the doubles.

Jen and Kirstin both had close matches, with Jen taking the win over Rachel Sheridan 6-4 7-5 after fighting from 2-5 down in the second set. Kirstin had some tremendous rallies, and then played champs tiebreak pushing her opponent around the court, even breaking a string on match point! She took the win 6-4, 5-7 1-0 against Alice Eggleston.

Vikki and Saykin paired up for the first time, only ever met previously as opposition, had some great rallies and lots of deuce games, but unfortunately lost out 2-6 2-6, not quite having enough time to gel against an experienced doubles pairing of Caitrin Roskilly and Claire Morrison.

At the half way point Warwickshire looked good with a 2-1 lead.

Heading into the doubles, Jen and Kirstin paired up to play Caitrin and Claire. They struggled to adjust into doubles after the singles battles and lost the first set 1-6. Having played together all season in the Cov and district premier league for Warwick TC, they worked out their tactics, used their experience and upped their game, attacking to take the second set 6-1. Feeling confident going in to the tiebreak, they continued to dominate, taking the win 10-6. Warwickshire now guaranteed victory.

Saykin and Vikki played the doubles against Rachel and Alice, still getting to know each others games, unfortunately getting edged out of the first set 3-6. Then it clicked! They really bought it together with Vikki running everything down on the base line and Saykin volleying beautifully at the net! They were 6-6 in the second set and fought hard to take the tiebreak, leading to a champs. Once again they grew stronger as a pair, faultless in approach, out playing their opposition to take the tiebreak 10-6 for the win! 3 champs tiebreaks made it our day with a 4-1 win and smiles all round!

Thanks to all the ladies for playing, looking forward to the next match on the 1st of September.
