Captains Report
County Cup 2023 Division 1a – Warwickshire Boys 14u
Squad – Max Emil Kunze, Veer Tumber, Dylan Ram, Sebastian Wood, Rehan Redza
Captain – Collen Mhlanga/Simon Ferguson
Vice-captain – Harry Malone
The weekend in Lymm began with a tough tie against a strong Yorkshire team. The Warwickshire
boys got off to a flyer, with both Seb (4) and Dylan (3) picking up hard earned wins against difficult
opponents. Veer (2) was beaten in the end but gave a good account in set 2, while Max (1)
competed better than the eventual scoreline suggested. With the score at 2-2 and all to play for
going into the doubles, the Bears teams couldn’t quite get it done, with Veer and Rehan (2) and Max
and Seb (1) both losing out. Yorkshire 4-2 Warwickshire.
West Scotland proved to be a tricky obstacle to overcome later on Saturday, with the top 3 players
(Max, Dylan and Seb) struggling, before Rehan made his first appearance in singles and battled hard,
eventually falling short in a really tight, slightly controversial 2 nd set tie break. Veer and Dylan (1) lost
the first doubles, before Seb and Rehan managed to complete a brilliant comeback victory to secure
the final point of the day. West Scotland 5-1 Warwickshire.
After a Saturday evening team-bonding bowling trip (which showcased some unconventional
techniques), the boys brought a renewed spirit on Sunday morning for their tie against Cheshire,
who themselves had enjoyed a strong first day. After a rain delayed start, Seb (4) Dylan (3) and Veer
(2) lost close matches in which they showed some of their best tennis, all 3 falling just short in set
and match tie breaks. Finally, Max played the set of the week, outdoing a very strong opponent to
win an amazing tie break 8-6, before the rain returned. This meant that we were robbed of the
conclusion of this fantastic match, plus the doubles which was scheduled after. As Cheshire had
already won through to the finals, it was agreed that we wouldn’t risk injury on slippy hardcourts,
and play was abandoned. Cheshire 3-0* Warwickshire. *unfinished.
As captains, we were pleased with the attitude the boys showed all weekend – they supported each
other and gave their all on court in tricky conditions. Additionally, all 5 boys contributed to the team
effort, and showed great spirit. They’re a young group, and we hope they continue to grow so they’ll
be able to compete hard next year (and hopefully improve their bowling too!)
They represented themselves, their families, coaches and Warwickshire LTA brilliantly, so thank you
boys!
