Warwickshire 70s Men Seniors County Cup 2021

Vs Herefordshire & Worcestershire at Malvern 15th July

An excellent 4-1 win over Herefordshire & Worcestershire at Malvern, especially since H&W had what was probably their strongest team. Philip Shaw-Hamilton and Dave Bradbury must have regretted volunteering to play singles once they felt the heat of the blazing sun, but they battled to the end. Philip, playing his first county match, narrowly lost out to Roy Halfpenny but did a good job in pushing him to the limit so he had to withdraw from the doubles. Dave overcame ex-Warks stalwart Ken Lloyd in the second singles. Simultaneously Mick Webb and Will Rogers sweated to a good win over H&Ws first pair which included Warks treasurer Alan Purnell. The two doubles rubbers that followed saw Warwickshire confirm a 4-1 win. Philip (far right in photo) proved that he is by far the fittest of the team by looking like he could go straight off and run a marathon after the match.

Vs Nottinghamshire at West Bridgford 18th August

In 2019 Warwickshire 70s men met Notts at the same venue and came away with a closely fought 3-1 win. This year, Warwickshire took a very different team but came away with the same winning margin.

The first two rubbers were a very topsy-turvy affair, with Warwickshire’s first pair of Dave Bradbury and Will Rogers winning the first set 6-3, losing the second 0-6, and coming through on a champs tie-break. Our second pair of Geoff Hayward and Philip Shaw-Hamilton (a real tennis specialist but a newcomer to county lawn tennis) won the first set 6-0, lost the second, then came through by winning their champs tie-break. Geoff and Philip succumbed to the Notts first pair, but Dave and Will trounced the Notts first pair by what is impolitely known as a double bagel.

Vs Leicestershire at Streetly 23rd Sept

At 2-1 up and both doubles matches simultaneously going into into champs tie-breaks, a pessimist may have suggested a shock defeat for Warwickshire if the CTBs had gone the wrong way. However, having had a rocky start in the first set, Andy Clifford and Philip Shaw-Hamilton (first time they'd played together), took the second set 6-0 and then trounced their opposition 10-0 in the CTB. Meanwhile, Mick Webb and Dave Bradbury overcame a second set wobble and took their CTB 10-6, so our boys won the match 4-1.

Earlier, Andy had bravely won a tense singles, again in a champs tie-break. Philip came across a canny Scotsman who, even with Philip's renowned athletic skills, still managed to occasionally put the ball out of his reach.
