Warwickshire O65s Ladies vs Dorset

After much longed for morning rain we were once again lucky with a glorious afternoon for tennis. Dorset had made the trip up in the morning. It’s over a three hour drive but they didn’t seem to experience the stiffness that besets some of us after that length of drive!

Wendy Supperstone and Margaret Simcox went into the lead against Helen Crawford and Alison Hockey before they settled but the Dorset pair then took the first set with viciously sliced forehands and powerful midcourt volleying. The second set was nip and tuck but again the decisive volleying proved a winner and Dorset won 6-3, 6-4. Meanwhile Linda Clements and Lin Lisle battled away against second couple Nina Crane and Sue Hobden, losing 3-6, 0-6. The scoreline was not representative of a hard fought match where so many games went to deuce after deuce but ended up drifting away.

In the reverse rubbers Linda and Lin took just one game off Helen and Alison who by now had settled in. Again there were many hard fought rallies. After losing the first set 4-6 to Nina and Sue, Wendy and Margaret came back strongly to take the second 6-1. Unfortunately they couldn’t keep the momentum going and lost another of those horrible championship tie breaks that keep escaping us. A 4-0 loss but a very enjoyable afternoon and great tennis.
