County Cup Under 14s Report
We arrived at Repton Friday afternoon for a fabulous practice on their hard courts. We were the only team there and the girls looked very sharp and adapted well to the bounce & short run back!
After a great meal and team evening we were ready for the weekend ahead.
The girls played Suffolk on the first morning and knew we had a tough day ahead. The girls fought hard and took them all the way. After some very close matches going to match tiebreaks it ended with a 4-2 loss. But huge well done to Georgie on her singles win and Lily and Shennai on their doubles win! Great performance on the doubles court from both our pairs. After a challenging 2 battles on court, unfortunately T’nae’s knee injury meant she couldn’t play the rest of the weekend
We then started to take on Derby… we got off to a convincing 4-0 on Day 1.
Day 2, the girls were fired up ready for the doubles v Derby! Georgie and Jess, Lily and Shennai made two great partnerships and were complimented on their doubles performances by other spectators. Credit to the girls for embracing drills we had done with them at county training when they could make it. Also, the team spirit we had throughout meant they were present on and off the court, bonding really well which showed in their partnerships.
Day 2 - We then had to play South Wales. The girls started confidently. We took them to a shoot out thanks to Lilys fantastic 3 set singles win and the doubles which were amazing to watch (same pairings as Derby)
We asked the girls who was up for the shoot out! After a few nerves, the girls decided between them that Lily and Jess would take them on. The South Wales seemed to be more confident which meant they took the win needed to secure 2nd place this weekend.
Big shout out to Lily and Shennai who won all 3 doubles and to each of the girls for their overall performances and team spirit throughout the weekend. Josie and I encouraged the girls to be as present as possible with each other as they all got on so well and we noticed the difference in their play when they were together as a team without other distractions. This was a really positive part of the weekend. We lost out by such a small margin which of course is a shame but as we know, anything can happen on the day.
Well done to Shennai who was playing in her first ever County Cup! She really did embrace the weekend & give it her all!
We hope T’Nae makes a speedy recovery.
Another exciting & eventful County Cup!
