Members of Kenilworth Tennis, Squash and Croquet Club have joined forces to write an entire history of their club to celebrate a milestone in 2023.
The club was founded in Queens Road in 1901 but moved to the current site in Crackley Lane in the 1960s. The clubhouse opened in 1963, so this is a Diamond Jubilee year.
Fortunately committee members through the decades kept all the minutes and records, which were stored in the club cellar. A group of members - Mel Jennings, Kay Gebbels, Shirley Whiting and Frank Hurst - dug them out and compiled a colourful 122-year history which is on the website and can be made available in booklet form.
Club vice-president Mel Jennings said, "The history is not just a chronology of events - the club is about our people. We asked our 700 members to send in their own memories and photographs and had a wonderful response from players who wanted to share anecdotes from the past.
"Chapters were released online to members every Friday and more contributions came in as the project gathered momentum.
"Going through the early and enchanting handwritten minutes was a labour of love and made us realise how much we have depended on volunteers to keep our successful club going through the years.
"The club has come a long way since a donkey was employed to cut the grass 122 years ago. We now have nine tennis courts, six squash and racketball courts, two croquet lawns, two new padel courts and a thriving bar. However, the friendly atmosphere of the club remains the same."
The club is planning a party later this year to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of the clubhouse.
