In the final match of the season, Peter M & Andy Snr beat Peter T & Tony 6-4, 6-1 (left to right in the photo taken immediately after). There was minor excitement for the massive crowd (Ken) when Peter T & Tony took the lead late in the set but when the entire crowd (Ken) moved to watch the exhibition match on court 2 it was clear it was all over!
Our champion, Peter McHugh, has played some tremendous tennis over the season and I’m sure everyone agrees that he fully deserves to retain his crown. He could have won the title sooner if he’d have ignored the weather and turned up to play on 31 October when the sun shone less then an hour after a biblical downpour at 8am! It may be the first season where we have not had a cancelled match because of the weather. We’ve either been lucky or climate change has affected Willaston earlier than predicted by the experts..
Congratulations also to Will and Mark T for their highest ever finishes and they qualify for the Champions League. Graham recovered from an awful start to finish in a solid Europa League position and Peter T (joint top draw master) also finished the league strongly and takes the Europa Conference spot.
Many thanks to Jon Foulkes for his usual splendid organisation and Sunday morning at 9am now reverts to 'turn up and play' until the 2022/23 league kicks off again in the Autumn.
