Access road:  I think we can all agree that the access road has been dramatically improved and will all make a big difference to the state of our cars.  This is the beginning of many club improvements with considerable investment.  Watch this space!

Tennis Club History:  One of our earliest members, Jan Empson, has very kindly made a Club History board for us with old photos and newspaper clippings.  This is now up in the club house and we have invited as many people from yesteryear as we can think of to our Club Champs Final day so please look out for them as they will have many stories.  Syliva McClelland has written the following for us:

Back in 1982 the first two courts were funded by the Bovingdon Parish Council and by money raised by Dot Burgin in Flaunden. At a well attended meeting in the Memorial Hall it was decided that a club should be formed with Ben Turok as chairman, Louise Archer as secretary, aided by Dot Burgin , Sylvia McClelland and others. The Parish Council granted the funds on the understanding that there should always be access for the public to play on the courts and Wilf Jarman agreed to undertake the public booking at his shop in the High Street.

The first two courts were built on the Sports Association land by the football club.

The first club house ( a redundant garden shed) was provided by the club chairman, Ben Turok and was transported from Belsize by Dot Burgin’s sons. There were no toilet facilities so members were reliant on the goodwill of nearby residents.

The coaching was provided by Roy Smith and Jan Empson who often provided transport for children to and from matches as well as barbecues.

There was tremendous good will provided by the early members and this provided the basis for the wonderful club we have today.’
