Week 1 Round-Up

A win and two draws gave Carlton LTC an unbeaten start to their 2023 campaign.

After suffering relegation to the seventh division last season, Carlton's third team put out a big statement with a commanding 16-0 win over Southbank's third team.

Highlights of a double bagel 6-0, 6-0 by top mixed doubles pair Dave Mulligan and Jenny Benge, a couple of impressive wins by Jacqui Metcalfe and the return to court action by long-time member Dave Porter made it a memorable night and a possible hint as to where this season could go for this team.

Earlier in the week, nothing could separate the first team and Waterloo in their entertaining 8-8 draw. After moving into a narrow 5-3 lead after the mixed doubles, many saw the ladies doubles would decide the contest.

Despite a lack of light during the match's conclusion, both sides were determined to complete the match and take home all the points. While a 7-6, 6-0 win by Debbie Balmforth and Emily Gyte put Carltin in the driving seat a 6-2, 7-6 defeat for Christelle Leboe and Belinda Miller ended the match honours even.

Further inland, the second team travelled to take on Aughton's second team. With both sides showing their quality, Carlton did have a chance of taking the lead at the halfway point. But a blown 5-0 in the opening set for mixed doubles pair Mick Walsh and Maura Hart kept Aughton in the contest and both teams remained level through the men's and women's doubles encounters.

Next week sees the first team travel to Hightown in a battle of the club's first teams, the second host the always tricky Town Green and the third team are on a trip to Sphynx 4.

Thank you to everyone who competed for the club this past week.
