CLUB CHAMPS

This years club championships was one to remember, we even had lots of sunshine and cream teas.

The junior club champs started off with the 8& under's which was played by Dash dickens and Ellis spruks. Its was a great match with dash the hot favourite storming in to an early lead but ellis was having none of it and was comming back strong not giving dash anything. it was a close match but dash in the end came out on top 10pts to 6.

The 9& under's were on court slugging in out in a game of true power with some huge hitting from the baseline. these two players are two to look out for in the future as Josh dover took an impressive win over Olivia Piveteau but i dint think we have heard the last from her, she displayed some very impressive hitting and managed several great winners from the baseline which Josh applauded himself like a true gent.

10& under's up next and a return to the court for the young josh dover who was up against an inform Tom Allen. This match promised to be good and the level of tennis high. Tom took the first set 4-0 and although Josh played some truly great shots and never gave up, the inform Tom was just to strong on this ocassion with Tom also wining the second set 4-0.

On to the 12& unders final now and this was probaly the match of the day. The inform Tom vs Gaberiel Roberts and neither of them wanted to go home without the win, this match was a true battle to the death. Tom got off to a great start and broke Gabe early in the first set and then again at the end to take the set by 6 games to 2. The second set was a close but it was the battling Gabe who fought back to break Toms serve at 5-4 and take the set 6-4. The third set was decieded on a first to 10 champs tie break, the rallys were long and both players looked nervous untill 5-3 when Gabe stepped up and hit a great forehand winner up the line which then gave him the confidence to power forwards and take the final set tiebreak by 10pts to 6. This was a truly epic final with both boys deserving the win. Im sure next year aged only 10 that Tom will be very tuff to beat and may get his hands on the 12& under title.

Sitting in the sun and watching the 14& unders go head to head a match between Josh Prince Smith and Noah Harries i felt a great sense of satisfaction. I had already seen such a high level of tennis and then these two come out with some seriously big hitting and shots of great touch. Josh took the early lead in the first set but a tired looking Noah worked his socks off to get the match back to all even at 3-3. the effort Noah put in may have taken its toll as josh stayed strong and took the first set 6 games to 3. the second set was again very close and josh was keeping noah at bay even tho Noah was throwing all he had at Josh and think i even saw a kitchen sink in one rally. Josh held on again and took the 2nd set by 6 games to 4 giving him the match 6-3,6-4 yet another fantastic display of tennis by two great players and both showed great sportsmanship towards eachother during the match.

The 16& unders was yet again another 3 set battle, this time it was old rivals Sonny Hunter vs Nalin Kellaway and it was all up for grabs including bragging rights ofcourse. Sonny started strong and took advantage of a slightly injured opponent in the first set. Dispite Nalin carrying a hamstring strain he battled hard and after losing the first set to an inspired Sonny 6-3 he won the 2nd set 6-4. Going in to the third set the pressure was on and it was Sonny on this occassion who stepped up and took ot on. He served big and hit some huge forehands to break Nalin early, then once Sonny broke Nalin for the second time in the set it looked like Nalin realised this was a match that was just slipping away. Sonny took the third set and the match 6-3,4-6,6-1.

In the 18& under's we had Sonny back on court vs the hot favourite Eaun Rayner Gray. Sonny had played in two finals already in the hot mid day sun and was loking like he had given his heart and soul. Some how sonny took a suprise 2-1 lead in the first set, but then the day caught up with him and his truly epic efforts through the day had finnally taken their toll. Sonny lost the first set 6-2 and although he didnt want to quit he just had no choice and approached the net to shake Euan,s hand. Sonny was gracious in defeat and applauded euan on his succes and like wise Euan showed sympthay for his fallen club friend but knows he will be back stronger next year.

Afew mentions of the adult club champs now which was equally as impressive on the day.
