2016/17 League Roundup

Ladies' First Team

With lots of close matches in division two our first team did very well to remain in division two after gaining promotion last year.  They managed to win four out of the nine matches with their penultimate match away at Welbeck being the most crucial in terms of avoiding relegation.  Second pair Laura and Alex managed to beat the first pair from Welbeck in a tight rubber meaning that only one rubber needed to be won in the third round.  The whole team played some very good tennis throughout the season.

Ladies' Second Team

The second team had several of our new members taking part.  They managed to finish mid-table with their match against Chesterfield C being the most notable.  This was played on two different surfaces with rain delays and our ladies managing to win by one game.  Well done to all the players who not only had to deal with the bad weather but also the new rule of sudden death deuce.  Despite this rule being put into place to shorten matches some did not finish until well after 10 pm.

Men's First Team

After promotion to the first division last year the first team were up against the odds with injury and illness affecting the squad.  Their only win came against Barnsley and they will be playing division two next year.  Let's hope the yoyo continues.

Men's Second Team

There were some late substitutions this year with some of the second team having to play for the first team.  Despite this the team have managed to avoid relegation by the skin of their teeth winning their last two matches.  It all went down to the last match against Ridgeway which had been abandoned due to the rain and had to be replayed.  New member Trevor and junior Matt were very willing participants and Will's return also helped bolster the team.

Midweek Mixed Team

The Midweek Mixed Team have had a fantastic season finishing in second position, with just one point more than their close rivals Brentwood A who lost their last match to Welbeck.  This is a far cry from last year when the team were saved from relegation by the divisions being adapted to fit round new teams entering the league.  Whether this means promotion we will have to wait and see as the leagues may once again be effected by the number of teams playing in the league..

Saturday Mixed Team

With two back to back promotions we were unsure how our mixed team would handle being in the division two. But we needn’t have worried. They started the season with a convincing 8-1 win. The team won four of their nine matches, as did the three teams below them. But with a better rubber count we managed to secure fifth place overall

Late Summer Ladies' and Men

The late summer ladies’ team came third in division three, whilst the late summer men’s finished third in division one.

Grove Floodlit

Once again we had two teams playing in the Grove Floodlit leagues. Our first team had been promoted to the first division and faced some tough opposition. Generally the ladies found themselves celebrating each game they won rather than any sets. The men were more successful but in the end we finished bottom. The second team did better in division two winning two of their matches.

Winter League

Congratulations to our winter league second team who won this year’s fourth division. A brilliant team effort by everyone who played saw the team dropping just 4.5 rubbers and sixteen sets, with their only two losses being against Hallam Grange by two sets and Buxton by just one.

This year saw us entering a third team in the winter league which gave the opportunity for more of our members to enjoy team tennis, and their seventh place position also in division four doesn’t reflect that they played some excellent tennis.

The second division once again proved to be a closely fought league with three teams including our first team finishing with sixteen points and just one win behind the leaders. With one more rubber than our closest rivals Buxton we finished in second place and will be playing in Division One next year. Well done to all who played.

Thank you to all the team organisers and captains.
