Harrogate Badminton League Tournament

Harrogate Racquets Club hosted the Harrogate Badminton League’s end of season handicap tournament over 3 successful evenings last week. A large entry was received from clubs across all 3 divisions.

The experienced pairing of Jenny Adrian and Lucy Kidd won the ladies doubles with Bedale pair Charlotte Hullah and Carol Stevenson finishing runners up. The final of the mens doubles proved to be a mini classic with Mark Penswick and Johnny Baines just prevailing over the junior pairing of Kieren Saphir and Callum Brooks  21-19 21-20.

Singles was the main event on the second evening with Lizzie Rigby winning the final of the ladies against Lucy Kidd in an all Racquets Club affair. The juniors were out in force again in the mens singles, Kieren and Callum being joined by Jacob McKie and Daniel Bullcock. Competition was very close with Kieren winning a nail biting final over Tim Barritt 21-19 21-19.

The third evening featured the mixed doubles with Matt Maturi and Mia Barlow from Otley beating Chris and Karen Bumby from Thirsk in a split game 17-21 21-9 on combined points totals.

The tournament was a great advert for badminton in the Harrogate district, with new faces entering and the success of the junior players proving the highlight.

Club nights continue over the summer at HRC, Firs Road for intermediates on Wednesdays and for more experienced players on Tuesdays and Thursdays, visitors always welcome.
