As the school bell rang at 9.00 am precisely, the most promising young players from around the Harrogate district began to fill the table tennis tables in Rossett School’s Sports Centre as the North Yorkshire region’s 2018 Team Tournament for schools got off to a cracking start.
Tournament organiser, Dale Ward said, “I’m delighted with the number of entries for this year’s tournament with some particularly strong teams representing Harrogate Grammar School and St John Fisher High School respectively”. And she was especially thrilled with the number of girls entering the event with teams from St John Fisher and Oatlands Juniors.
Harrogate GS put out a formidably strong boys team in the under 13 event and, true to form, they comfortably beat a talented St John Fisher team. But the tables were turned comprehensively in the Boys under 16 event. The St John Fisher team led by the Kelly brothers are now a very accomplished side with strength in depth. The elder Kelly brother is now a force to be reckoned with at the top of the Harrogate league and indeed in the Yorkshire region.
The winners ; St John Fisher Boys U16 , HGS Boys U13, St John Fisher Girls U13 will go through to the Zonal Finals on the weekend of Saturday 19th January at Kirkby Stephen Grammar school in Cumbria.
Co-organiser of the event, Bokmun Chan, whose own daughter, Ruby, is now playing for England, commented, “There’s been a real buzz around the Sports Hall today. The kids have had a great time and the level of competition has been outstanding.” Many of the tournament’s youngsters have been improving their game at Harrogate Racquets club. Development Manager, Vanessa Cameron said, “We’re making this our priority. We’re very pleased with the progress they’ve made”. The club has been working alongside several schools including Pannal Primary, Oatlands Junior and Rossett Acre Primary to provide an introduction to the game and coaching.
If you have a youngster that would like to play table tennis do get in touch. We run sessions several times a week including a girls only session on Mondays 5-6pm. Vanessa@harrogateracquetsclub.co.uk
