In the second fixture of the summer season, the mixed team built on the tense, narrow winning draw achieved against Hallow in the season's opener, with a convincing win over Woolhope.
Simon Cuthbertson and Kate Fardon opened with a comfortable 6 - 0, 6 - 2 win. Charlotte Bradford and Richard Swinson-Davis woke up after a sluggish opening set to win the next two sets. At the end of the first set, Bradford's decision to put S-D on the backhand side proved inspired and they didn't look back, winning the next two 5 and 3. Cuthbertson wasn't happy at having to wait for the match conclusion, inquiring what they were "messing around at...".
In the next rubbers, things weren't straightforward. One of Bradford and S-D's opponents tore a contact lens leading to a lengthy delay. Annie Bishop, spectating and scoring, asked why one member of the pair was lying down on the court waving their legs in the air. It was pointed out that this was a necessary stretching and conditioning routine. Further delay was to follow, in the form of a torrential downpour. Despite the conditions, both pairs completed their matches, Fardon and Cuthbertson 5 and 5, Bradford and Swinson-Davis, 2 and 4.
After an enjoyable tea in the rain, bringing further complaints from Cuthbertson (who needed to get back to finish marking he should have completed days ago) and Bradford ("I'm wet and cold"), all agreed it was a job well done.
