On Friday24th November we held our Club Dinner & Awards Evening.
It was a wonderful evening full of superb speeches, lovely food, lots of laughter and a brilliant atmosphere!
Congratulations to all of our award winners and Club Champs.
From Chairman Richard Holman:
"Great to see so many people here – for those of you who don’t know me, I am Richard Holman and chairman of the club & I like the sound of my own voice.
Since last year's dinner, I was hoping for a few things:
1. More people in attendance tonight– smashed it - over 50 of us
2. We would get more people playing league games and box matches – definitely done that.
3. Win the mixed doubles cup – we are the champions! (more to follow)
Tonight is about some awards and some end of season reports. We will hear from each of them through the evening.
So first to our captains. I want to thank all of our captains. We cannot play without them.
Thanks goes to Barbara & Antony, as they were new to the roles this year.
To Jane Jordan for setting up a Ladies team for the first time.
I would also personally like to take a moment and thank Jason – someone who has gone over and beyond.
First team captain, but he organises the purchase of match balls, the registration of all male players, produces a spread sheet of all the teams results and league positions. Offering to captain both men’s sides. Thank you Jason.
So to our awards and speakers..."
Award Winners
Awards from our club coach, Laura James:
Most Improved Female - " This person has improved so much over the last year, becoming more consistent in her game and goodness me now has a backhand to look out for!" -Linda Adams
Most Improved Male - "This player has improved incredibly over the last year. We have had Eureka moment after eureka moment! Although one of those did include me thinking about getting a t-shirt that said ‘LOOK AT THE BALL TIM!” -Tim Yonge
Most Improved Junior - "My junior player has not only improved so much in her technique and tactical ability, she shows so much fight & determination on court & recently even got invited to my invite only Green Stars Session." -Annabel Mackenzie
Chairman's personal Award:
Couple of the year - This year’s couple of the year play in all the box matches and club champs. She not only supports her husband at matches, but is prepared to throw herself to the ground and go to A&E to ensure that the courts are sprayed. Such is her commitment to the club!
He has captained the men’s team to league success, He is shy and needs his Aunt to bring him out of his shell & to events like this.
They have bred successfully and their kids are members.
So vested are they in the club, that last year they even brought me a trophy to give to the club, because they felt it should be shared and not just sit in their house.
I could not let that selflessness go unawarded and so I have the great honour of returning not only that trophy, but I have one each – this is thanks on all of the club's behalf" -Mark and Helen Phillips

Mixed Cup Captain's Report
"As there was no Mixed A team in Division 1 this season the cup competition became the focus for the young club elite – hoping to go one better than in 2022.
Laura and Joe teamed up again, and Yuen paired up with Gemma.
The first round was straightforward vs old rivals Churston. Second round vs Newton Abbot less so – it came down to individual games won, rather than sets, and a test for mine and Laura’s mental arithmetic. 38-33 victory for Newton and Noss.
Next up Cary Park A and Gemma decided to head to France for the entire summer holidays! So I got promoted! 2-2 at half time. Boosted by home crowd support secured a 5-3 win.
Final here we come vs Torquay. A new team to the league was an unknown quantity, but we did know they had topped Division 1…
It turned out to be a scorching day in October. We got off to a wobbly start with Laura recovering from a bug, and the team adapting to the surface at Totnes. Once again 2-2 at half time.
Laura and Joe were gaining in confidence after their first pair win, while Yuen and Gemma were battling it out – narrowly losing their third set. Supporters and teams were getting edging and starting to do their sums. It was going to close. Yuen’s painkillers kicked in and they went on to win the last set of the day! 5-3 win overall, (42-37).
Great match, great win – beating bigger clubs along the way.
