8 players entered Park's Singles Handicapped Baldwin Trophy Competition this year, including 3 Baldwin Trophy title holders from previous years. The players were divided into two groups of four in a round-robin format of first to 4 games, with the top 2 players in each group progressing through to the semi-final knockouts. Semi-finalists Matthew Hoggard and James Johnson proved unbeatable throughout, comfortably paving their way for a shot at the title.
The final was played first to 6 games and it was tense, with both players breaking each other's serve playing a variety of great positional shots. Matthew was consistent in making James run around the court whilst James focused on his backhand, trying to dictate the rallies. At 5-5 neither player had held serve. In the final service game, from 0-30 down, James placed two strong serves to make it 30-30. Two tense points later, James managed to push Matthew to the back of the court before smashing away the championship point to put a new name on the Baldwin trophy this year. The cup was presented to James by last year's trophy winner, Jordan Hoyle. Congratulations, James, on a job well done and well done to our finalist, Matthew Hoggard! Great tennis both!
