Facilities Update
- Court Resurfacing
Resurfacing of all the courts is nearing completion. Courts 1,2,3 & 4 are finished, having been repainted and put back in play. Courts 5 & 6 have been laid with TigerTurf but the sand laying and finishing touches have yet to be completed. 1st Surface are hoping to finish the work by Wednesday next week (i.e. 23rd August) but this depends upon the weather staying dry and warm. The baseline on court 3 has slight colour bleeding on it. Action : Rupert Matthews to contact 1st Surface for correction of baseline on court 3 Agreed to withhold a % of final payment for the resurfacing until the TigerTurf courts have been in play for a few weeks to ensure there are no teething problems.
- Rugby Club lighting
The Rugby Club have previously asked to be allowed to run a power supply from the sub_station to enable lighting of the rugby pitch(es). RTC originally funded the installation of the sub_station, so we have agreed to the proposal in principle, provided that the Rugby Club re_reimburse us for 50% of the original cost of installation, and pay for any power they use directly to the supplier. This was originally discussed at the last AGM. Discussions are ongoing. Action : Stuart Long to progress.
- Court Cleaning
Paul and Louise Wilson have been cleaning the courts and mowing the grass for a while now but there has been little to no contact between them and the current Committee. It has been reported that they do not have a current key to the grounds and that they have queried how to clean the new artificial surface. Action : Mike James to make contact and arrange a meeting [post meeting note: Wilsons Gardens and Grounds have been contacted by email, and I am awaiting a reply]
- Floodlights
Several of the floodlights are out with bulbs needing replacement. Action : Stuart Long to arrange replacement of blown floodlight bulbs
Court Opening Event
Committee members had previously agreed that it would be appropriate and fun to have an opening event to mark the completion of the court resurfacing. A variety of proposals were discussed with eventual agreement that a day involving several elements would be organised; probably to include a public "come and try" session, a fun tournament, a demonstration match and a barbecue. Likely dates are September 9th or 16th. Action : Claire Crafter to organise Court Opening Event Action : Mike James to book all courts for both dates [post meeting note : Complete]
Coach Development
The club has previously provided a contribution to young adults towards the cost of gaining LTA coaching qualifications. Having a cadre of coaches is important for the club and as coaches leave (for university, other locations etc) we need to encourage others to take over formal coaching. The committee agreed to fund 50% of the coach Level 2 cost for a female adult club member. This is a modest amount. Action : Russell Hollingsworth to progress.
Summer Camp Juniors Parents Bookings
Several email requests have been received from parents of Summer Camp junior members, asking for the ability to book courts for their juniors to play on. It was discussed and confirmed that unless the parents themselves are members they cannot book courts for their children who are junior members. Also noted that we have a clear policy regarding children on courts (see below).
"Policy on children playing unsupervised:-We want children to play as much tennis as possible. The club will allow children of 13 years or older to play unsupervised on the courts. We have tried to be as flexible as possible but some rules are inevitable. These are as follows:
1. The parents take all responsibility for children left to play unsupervised, the club bears no responsibility.
2. The parent is responsible for the key and making sure that the courts are secured.
3. Players must lock themselves into the courts and have a mobile phone in case of emergencies.
4. 13 is the minimum age so a 13 year old cannot supervise younger children.
5. Players must only play with other tennis club members."
Royston Tennis Club Branded Clothing
Agreed to have Royston Tennis Club branded clothing on offer to members. Two purchase sessions a year will be organised (probably Autumn and Spring) with the first one before the end of this year. Orders will be solicited via the web site news and posters etc. The range will be:
Polo shirt, white or black / Crew neck shirt, white or black / Hoodie & Zip hoodie, white or black
All will have the club logo printed on them, either in black (on white) or white (on black) with the yellow ball motif. Action Matt Fellingham & Mike Fellingham to progress.
Matters arising / AOB (All)
- Listing Article. Royston Tennis Club had a half page article in the August issue of The Listing thanks to Mike James. For those who missed it, it can be found on page 26 in the magazine, online at : https://issuu.com/thelisting/docs/1708_the_listing_royston_as_publish
- Membership. Current membership is at about 385 in total, with 113 Adults, 16 Seniors, 2 Honorary, 32 Social and the rest made up of Families, Juniors and Tots. This is a very healthy total membership.
- Tennis Balls. We are reverting back to Slazenger balls in the light of some complaints about the ones currently in use.
- Monday Team Nights. These are not a great success as turn out is patchy. This will be discussed at a later meeting.
- Singles Ladder. Noted that we need someone to help set up the Singles Ladder that has been discussed a few times this year - Any volunteers ? Please contact Rupert Matthews (the Chairman).
