Rugby Lawn Tennis Club & Rugby Golf Club join forces to prevent Landfill
Rugby Lawn Tennis Club & Rugby Golf Club have combined forces to prevent over 18 tonnes of synthetic astroturf from going to landfill. The timing and logistics of the project were handled to perfection as Steve Hammond – Course Director & John Vic – Chairman of the Tennis Club got their heads together over a pint to make it happen.
Court numbers 3 & 4 of the 6 courts at the Tennis Club were long overdue for resurfacing at a cost of over £50,000. The other 4 courts will also be queueing up for some attention but 1 step at a time as funds allow all donations welcome!
We began by asking all the local schools, golf clubs and farms if they would be interested in preventing our old acrylic surface from going to landfill. Most were interested but the sheer volume and logistic requirements prevented them from helping.
John Wilson, a member at both clubs suggested speaking with Steve at the golf club who ironically John Vic had already hooked up with and the rest is now history.
Memberships at both sporting venues predominantly serves the local and surrounding community and people can join all year round.
We had kind offers of help in the run up to the project as we took delivery of 24 giant pallets that would help transport the 2 – metre wide by 15 metre rolls which weighed approximately ¾ tonne each as the surface was sliced up and uplifted from the courts to await their journey.
We did not use them in the end as Steve Hammond using the Golf Club’s resources got the necessary equipment and transport to enable a smooth transition of the 18 tonnes of what would have been waste but will now be repurposed at the Golf Club to ensure safe movement in and around the grounds.
As you can see from the various visuals it was a satisfying outcome for all. John Vic would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved that made this possible.
