Annual Todmorden Shield Event

On Sunday, in glorious weather, Ramsey Tennis Club hosted the annual Todmorden Shield Event. This event is a three club, doubles event between Albany, Castletown and Ramsey with 4 Ladies and 4 Men representing each club.

Unfortunately, this year for the first time since the Shield has been contested, Albany could not field any players which was disappointing for the other two teams.

The format was Supersets (one set to 8) with each game won counting towards the team’s total. Both teams were missing many of their top players, but players from both Clubs stepped up to take part.

The Ladies played first with Castletown’s two pairs Kirree Ronan/Hannah Snidal and Amanda Munro/Jenny Foy taking on Ramsey’s Anna Kirk/Helen Brooks and Caitlin Henery/Alison Hart.

Anna/Helen bt Amanda/Jenny 8-0, Kirree/Hannah bt Caitlin/Alison 8-3, Caitlin/Alison bt Amanda/Jenny 8-2 with Kirree/Hannah just coming out on top against Anna/Helen 8-6.

This meant after the Ladies part of the event Ramsey were just leading 25-18.

The Men then took to the courts with Herman Oberholzer/PJ Vermeulen and Richard Cregeen/Simon Martin representing Castletown, with Jon Gower-Jackson/Leon Henery and Richard Simpson/Sam Harris playing for Ramsey.

In the first round of matches Richard/Simon bt Jon/Leon 8-1 with Herman/PJ defeating Richard/Sam 8-6.

So with one more round to go, Castletown had just edged into a slender 2 point lead. In the final round Richard/Simon bt Richard/Sam 8-1 and Herman/PJ beating Jon/Leon 8-6.

This meant that Castletown were the overall winners by 50 points to 39.

Throughout the day every match was played with great team spirit, which resulted in a very enjoyable days tennis all round.
