For our last home match of the season, we had three of the four usual players with Peter taking Sonny’s place. With a little bit of mizzle during the day and some just before we started the courts were a little bit slippery but quickly dried up and we were all good to go. The pairs for this match were Nick and Chris as the A pair and Luke and Peter as the B pair.
Nick and Chris got off to a great start by winning the first 5 games in a row but then St Austell started fighting back as they took the next two games before Nick and Chris managed to finish of the set 6-2. In the second set it was a lot closer with the games going with the serve until Nick and Chris manged to break a serve to finish the second set 6-4. Against the other pair the first set was a long one with some long rallies with St Austell leading the way and finally grabbing the first set 6-3. In the second set Veryan rallied back and managed to flip the score to win the second set 6-3 taking it to a 10-point tie break. After a long and tense tie break Nick and Chris managed to get the win with the final score of 10-7.
Luke and Peter didn’t get off to the best of starts even though it was going with serve to begin with St Austell started to make a little break away, but Luke and Peter fought back to gain 4 games before losing the set 6-4. In the second set it was a lot closer with the games going back and forth until 5-5 where St Austell did an extra push to win the last two games to win the second set 7-5. Against the second pair it started of better with them quickly getting to 3-0 before losing a game but then managed to get another two before losing another game but then they ended the set winning it 6-2. In the second set it didn’t go to plan with them losing 4 games before winning a game but couldn’t get any more before the set was over and taking it to a 10-point tie break. The tie break was very even with it going back forth until 5-5 where St Austell manged to pull away and finish off the tie break 10-5.
This meant that the scores so far were 5-5 so it came down to the games won to decide who won the matches. After a careful count the was only one game difference with Veryan with 38 and St Austell with 37. So Veryan won the match and walked away with 7 points. Veryan are now 3rd in the league with one match left to play and with a good win can see themselves coming second in the league.
