Winter Doubles 2018/19 - Amherst Results
The Wilson Sandford winter doubles season is now completed. Almost 40 players have competed for Amherst (23 male, 16 female) over six teams in all. Results have been mixed, but plenty of reasons to be cheerful.
Pride of place should go to the Ladies first team which, despite losing its first three matches, held its own in Div 2, finishing 4th out of seven (The Green finished 7th and were relegated, not that we should care) with a positive ratio of rubbers won. All seven players – Jo Charter, Pearl Hare, Nikki Crowhurst, Jane Garrett, Karen Cunnington, Debi Ani and Barbara Fentiman - made valuable contributions: a real team effort.
The Ladies second team finished 5th out of eight in Div 6E, relying upon first team players to boost performances: Pearl, Karen, Debi and Barbara all scored well.
The Ladies third team struggled in Div 8E, coming last of seven teams and presumably relegated. Clare Hooton had best results.
The Men's first team suffered from lack of a regular squad and also finished last out of eight in Div M3. Ten different players turned out, among them three juniors Ollie Bellhouse, Zak Prawanna and Hayden Hoxey. Alex Goodsell scored best.
The Men's second team held their place in Div 6. Jeff Gedge, Tom Lawford and Alex Goodsell contributed well.
Congratulations to the Men's third team who won Div 10E despite (or as a result of) using 11 players over their seven matches. Nigel Spencer-Smith was top scorer with nine victories in ten rubbers. Dermot Blake, Martyn Levitt and David Reading also had high success rates.
