Match Play

Jamie and his team of players have performed well this season coming in the middle of Division 2 of The Small Village League. A creditable performance from such a small club. Barley will be entering the winter season again having been promoted to Division 1. If anyone not already playing for ‘Team Barley’ and would like to can you contact Jamie 07528 375018.

Race Night

Race Night Dead Cert to Raise over £500 – (a much needed injection towards the resurfacing of the courts.)

The Autumn Barley Tennis Club Race Night fundraiser had all the fun, thrill and drama of a real day at the races and all the intrigue and plot of a Dick Francis novel. There were calls for stewards enquiries, accusations of doping, cheating and misuse of equipment (with foresight, whips were banned). Jockeys were found in breach of the rules although suspension was narrowly avoided and although there was a fall, luckily, no horses were hurt and no bones were broken.

The committee would like to say a big thank you to Richmond's and Bidwells along with local individuals, Alan, Joe, Laurence and Miles for sponsoring the 6 races. We would also like to thank all the punters who betted enthusiastically on each race (though, fortunately, no one lost their shirt) and all the horse owners for their generosity and the creative names given to their race horses! Our thanks also extend to the ladies and gentlemen who dressed for the occasion adding a touch of glamour and glitz to the evening, to Sam Mitchell for running the TOTE and to Ian Turner for making 6 sleek wooden thoroughbreds. A great night was had by all and funds will go towards resurfacing the courts and protecting them for future generations of tennis players. BTC Race Night will be back, by popular demand, next year. Thank you!

Open Tennis Days

The ‘Balls and Bangers’ fun day back in June was well attended and several new families came along and joined, we look forward to having them playing with us soon.

The Handicap Tournament was also well attended and the winners on the day were Sophie Emerson and Shelagh Shepherd, both went home with a rather handsome cup to display on their mantle shelf.

Club Sessions

Sunday mornings.

These will continue throughout the winter months starting at 10.30am and play usually finishes around 12.30 to 1pm. Turn up any time during the morning and you will be welcomed onto the court for a game. There is always a club member who will organise ‘the play for the day’ so no one gets left out. We have several new members that have joined this year and that haven’t managed to come along as yet. Please don’t be shy, we are always happy to have any standard of player join in. If you don’t feel confident then call the Club Coach who can help you to feel at home on the court. Jan Pledger 01763 848242

Monday/Thursday evenings

There is a group of players who would like to play through the winter and we are going to book indoor court/s either on a Monday – court availability good - or a Thursday if we can get a court from 7.30pm to 9pm at Hills Rd Tennis Centre in Cambridge. The cost per court per hour will be £20. If you are keen to play can you contact Jamie Gibbs 07528 375018 and get your name down. You do not have to play each week, Jamie will coordinate the players to fit with you all.

Junior Coaching

All the junior coaching through the winter will be held at Royston Tennis Club under their flood lights. Contact Matt Fellingham 07779 273655 if you want your child to join in.

Tennis Club Kit

We have had our own Barley Tennis Club logo embroidered on both white polo and navy blue sweat shirts. These have proved to be very popular and we are putting in a further order for more, the cost will be about £15 per sweat and polo and £20 for a half zip sweat.

If you wish to have your name embroidered on yours for a £5 fee, money goes to club funds. For all kit enquiries contact Carole Turner 01763 848713.
