Our History

The project to replace the rundown and delapidated tennis court on Bawdsey recreation Ground began in June 1997. The objective was to replace the court with two new courts, one for multi-sports use and one just for tennis.

The scope of the project was widened to include the provision of a new storage shed, cricket practice nets and to add a new 9mx9m basketball practice area. This open basketball area situated next to the court is free of charge; use of the cricket nets should be arranged through Bawdsey Cricket Club.

The total cost of the scheme was approximately £90,000 funded by a Sports Lottery Grant of 90% plus aditional financial contributions from Suffolk Coastal district Council, Lord Taverners, Adnams and other generous sponsors and fund raising events. It will be important to continue with fund raising events in order to help with the cost of maintaining these facilities.

It would be wonderful to be able to offer all these facilities totally free. However, the income from charges is needed to ensure that the facilities are properly maintained; there is no intention to make a profit. All proceeds go towards the upkeep of the facilities which are managed on a voluntary basis by a small committee of local residents.
