Over the 2021 August Bank Holiday weekend, Bidford Tennis Club celebrated seventy years with its annual Senior Tournament and was blessed with warm sunshine and little wind – the perfect conditions for tennis.
The tournament was played in good spirits and enjoyed by all with many members and families turning out to support the knockout rounds on the Saturday and the finals on the Sunday. The honours were happily shared around:
Maddie Golby won against Caroline Haffner in the Ladies Final, and in the Men’s Final Chas Morley overcame Harrison Parker. In the Ladies’ Doubles, Helen Keays and Leah Craven triumphed over Maddie Golby and Caroline Haffner, whilst in the Men’s Doubles, Rob Smallwood and Mike Schwarz beat David Howard and Rob Sussens. In the last final of the weekend, Caroline Haffner earned reward for her taxing finals day by succeeding with James Smallwood against Deidre Deegan and David Keays via a championship tie-break – a fitting end to the competition.
The Club would like to thank the Mid-Counties Co-operative for providing the food and drink for the free barbeque, and Parish Councillors Fred Hiscocks and Teri Cullum for turning out to provide support. Sadly Hon. Vice President Corin Bishop was unwell and unable to attend, but Club President Val Hamblin was able to make it and award the winners with their trophies.
Thanks to Chas Morley for organising the event, and to all the volunteers who helped make it such a sociable and fun weekend. It was pleasing to see several of our newer members and families participating and spectating.
