History of BTA

The courts were built as part of the local housing development almost 30 years ago. The club was first affiliated to the LTA in 2009 with coincided with the creation of the first BTA committee. The club has come a long way since the early days with a significant increase in membership, amazing community involvement with improved facilities such as weather cover and temporary floodlights. This was recognised last year with our club award from Berkshire Tennis.
We recognise the significant contribution of Tony Solomons who was our Chair from 2005 to 2019 and Clive Underhill who was our Treasurer but also carried out so many other tasks until he moved away. Clive remains one of our trustees, as indeed does Richard Nichols who has been our Secretary for many years and carried out the Chair role with John Pascoe until standing down recently. Ged Phillips carried out a major role in the maintenance of the courts and improvement of the facilities in the early days. He sadly died in 2019 and the new benches were purchased in part from a kind gift from his family. Other key individuals whose contribution we appreciate include:
Tim Usher who for many years was the club coach, with support from his wife Judith who has played a key role in the catering arrangements over many years for our annual Charity event. He continues on our committee and his loyal service was recognised with a long service award.
David Harper who was Chair for 2 years in 2021/22 and continues as Community Partner Relationships lead. David’s wife, Pauline is always a great supporter of the Charity event and together they often host the sub-committee meetings for this activity.
Penny Gilham who was our Welfare Officer in 2018 and chair in 2019. Together with her husband David they helped with the Charity event, providing their marquee and helped with the catering.
David Danson has been a committee member for over 10 years and had a spell as Chair before taking over all membership responsibilities. He has done a great job dealing with the increased membership with strong analytical and IT skills.
Steve Gardner took over from Clive when he moved away. Steve has done a great job as Treasurer dealing with a significant increase in membership & the challenges of the many more transactions from the coaching relationship with Trevor. His wife Judy is another great supporter of the Charity event, usually enabling extensive raffle ticket sales.
Joyce Dargie who for many years ran our Ladies & Mixed team and John Pascoe who organised our Men’s teams.
Jacqui Wright-Terry who became the Welfare Officer from September 2020 when Penny stepped down and the Ladies captain after Joyce Dargie stepped down in March 2023.
Trevor Kotchie and the coaching team for their major contribution to increasing membership (particularly of ladies and young people) and the range of coaching activities.
We are delighted that Jacqui Wright-Terry has recently stepped up as our Chair and will be ably supported by Kate Hutchings who replaces Richard as Secretary. Charlotte Bruce takes over as our new Welfare Officer.
The committee continues to be strong and is committed to the further improvement of our facilities. We appreciate the support of members and our stakeholders in this pursuit.
