There is something special about sport’s ability to bridge generations, and this past weekend at Bromsgrove Tennis Club, that sentiment was captured perfectly on court. In a milestone moment for the club, Max Feltham and his son, Ben Feltham, stepped out together to represent Bromsgrove in competitive league play—and they did so with style.

This debut comes just weeks after we wrote an article about Ben attending his first Tuesday evening social session, a step that clearly prepared him for the leap into the Herefordshire & Worcestershire League. While the social sessions provided the introduction, the league match provided the intensity, and Ben proved he belongs in the competitive arena alongside his father.
The partnership was a blend of familial chemistry and grit, with the pair looking right at home under the pressure of division play. After securing their first competitive win together, Max Feltham reflected on the significance of the day:
“I am really grateful to the club to give Ben and I the opportunity to represent Bromsgrove together. It was great to be part of such a supportive team and contribute to the win.”
Ben was not the only debutant for Bromsgrove Tennis Club Men's G team on the day;
The match against Cutnall Green Tennis Club also saw Matt Patterson step into the side and make an immediate impact. Matt teamed up with John Harrop. Both newcomers rose to the occasion superbly, contributing four crucial wins between them. Across the remaining rubbers, Bromsgrove maintained their intensity, although Martin German and Andrew Conroy were only able to take one of their two closely fought three-set matches.
Bromsgrove’s composure under pressure and ability to take key points at important moments gave them a firm foothold throughout the contest. Strong serving and disciplined net play allowed the team to edge several tight encounters, ultimately securing a deserved 5–1 victory.
Team captain Martin German praised the contribution of the newcomers, saying: “Matt and Ben were debutants getting four decisive wins.”
Matt Patterson added: “It was a brilliant experience making my debut. Everyone played their part and I was really pleased with my performance.”
With momentum building, Bromsgrove will look to carry this form into upcoming fixtures against Manor Park and Worcester.
