Warwickshire Adult Player of the Year (2023)

Back in 2022, I set myself a target to reach a career high ranking of top 100 in the UK, a milestone I have had a strong desire to achieve but believed my chances had passed over a decade ago back when I reached a UK ranking of #101 in my twilight playing days before my coaching career began.

In 2023, I played a total of 160 competitive matches, winning 140 with my longest win streak of 45 consecutive victories. Throughout the year, I won a total of 13 titles,  finals, winning 13 titles/promotions and 7 finals/runners-up.  4 Regional Grade 3 Titles, the Warwick Boat Club triple champion in Singles, Doubles and Mixed,  I had my most successful year to date reaching my highest career GB ranking

Warwickshire Club Team of the Year - Warwick Boat Club Men's First Team (2023)

The 2023 winning team is firmly established as the best performing team in Warwickshire, the Midlands and also one of the best in the UK. The team achieved local district records, winning both the Winter and Summer Premier Division Titles, holding the records for the highest number of match wins in both seasons and remaining unbeaten throughout all fixtures:

  • In the Coventry & District Men's Summer League, they were consecutive 5 times Premier Division Champions winning 50 of 56 matches
  • They were South Warwickshire Winter League Premier Division Champions for a 2nd straight year finishing the season with a 'perfect' unbeaten record throughout the 7 months winning all 48 matches.

The team were crowned in both the winter and summer as maiden Midlands Champions, reaching the National Finals of the Worldpay National Premier League and the LTA National League, which are the highest level team competitions in Great Britain. They finished the highest out of all Warwickshire teams and over the two competitions were the best performing outdoor club in the UK.

Warwickshire County Team of the Year - Men (2023 & 2020)

Over the past few years this team has gone from strength to strength under the captaincy of Gavin Henderson, Tennis Manager at Warwick Boat Club. From languishing in Group 5 of summer County Week, they've risen rapidly up the divisions with a string of excellent performances. Last summer, newly promoted from Group 4, they arrived, hoping to avoid relegation in a particularly strong group. Despite losing against the first two counties of Buckinghamshire and Derbyshire, the Bears, with several highly-successful new pairings, particularly the experienced Cameron Malik, a Warwick Boat Club coach and National Under 18 champion Luca Pow, then turned up the heat. They whitewashed Norfolk 9-0, beat West of Scotland 6-3, then on the final day, needing a comfortable win over the powerful Berkshire side who were led by the Warwick Boat Club coach Marcus Willis, they pulled off a 7-2 thrashing. Cameron and Luca won 3 out of 3 at third pair as they had done against the Scots, while the new second pair Alex Griffiths and Simon Ferguson won 2 out of 3 including an impressive victory over Marcus and partner 12-10 on a match tiebreak. This left the Midlanders 4 rubbers ahead of 3rd-placed West of Scotland and celebrating a promotion to Group 2 which they'd hardly dreamed of at the start of the week.

Gavin created a really good team spirit in a lively squad that was a mixture of experience and youth, including international players, county stalwarts, top coaches, young tour players and a 16-year-old making his County Week debut, Ferran Redza. They all played their hearts out and battled through on crucial points to snatch promotion - and they came heartbreakingly close to doing the same in Division 2 of the Winter County Cup at Edgbaston Priory. Again they'd arrived desperate to avoid relegation and pulled off two great wins over Buckinghamshire and West of Scotland but were agonizingly edged out by Hertfordshire - by a single set! Still coming so close has given them a great incentive for next year's County championships.

Ferran's mum Fifi paid tribute to the squad's 'unbelievable determination, resilience, passion and teamwork and wrote "All these positive attitudes are so beneficial to Ferran for his future tennis and the perfect role model to the younger tennis players. They are like one big happy family.
