30 Beavers introduced to tennis

30 Beavers introduced to tennis

On a sunny Wednesday evening Caterham & Whyteleafe Tennis Club and Cooper Tennis in the Community welcomed 30 Beaver Scouts and their helpers to the Club for an hour of fun tennis coaching.

It was the wish of Whyteleafe 1st Beaver Scout leader, Jeanette, that her Beavers should be introduced to a variety of sports as she recognises the importance of exercise from an early age and finding lasting friendship and personal value through group activity.

Caterham & Whyteleafe Tennis Club has as its core purpose exactly to bring physical, mental and social benefit to all in the local community, young and old, and was therefore delighted to provide free court time to the Beaver Scouts. To make the Beavers Scouts’ visit a little more exciting the Club also donated a Junior membership and a Playing Parent membership to one lucky family and look forward to welcoming them and any other budding tennis players back to the Club.

The coaching of the 30 lively 6-7 year olds was effortlessly provided by Cooper Tennis in the Community in the form of Peter, Allan and Zac, who managed to make the coaching fun and exciting for everyone. Well done to all who took part! Head Coach Peter Cooper has worked with local schools and tennis clubs for decades and shares C&WTC’s ethos and community spirit. You will find Cooper Tennis at school fairs and festivals through the spring and summer.

After this fun but short introduction to tennis the Beavers may now take up the LTA’s Youth Start offer - a low cost course of lessons which includes a racket, a t-shirt and group coaching. Coaching takes place at Caterham & Whyteleafe Tennis Club after school on most weekdays and Saturdays. The courts are tucked away in a quiet corner of Manor Park and parents and siblings are welcome to stay and watch or take the opportunity to explore the beautiful surroundings.

During the last two years the not-for-profit Caterham & Whyteleafe Tennis Club has seen a real revival due to the vision and hard work of the volunteers who run it. The Club has an open invitation to anyone from the local community to come down and meet its friendly people and try a free social session - everyone and anyone is welcome! Last year Whyteleafe Village Council, Surrey Councillor Jeffrey Gray and a private donator generously granted the Club funds towards the painting of the courts which gave the Club a much needed lift. This year the Club hopes to raise enough funds to introduce floodlights - a vital addition that will ensure that juniors can continue their coaching after school on weekdays through the darker months, and equally, that adults can utilise the courts in the evenings.
