Choosing the Right Junior Tennis Racket

Selecting the correct tennis racket for a child is essential for both performance and injury prevention. Using an adult-sized racket can hinder proper technique and even cause strain or injury due to the excessive length and weight.

Key Qualities of a Junior Tennis Racket

The most important factor in choosing a junior racket is length. The ideal racket should be proportional to the child’s height to allow natural stroke development and comfortable handling.

Simple Test for Fit:

Have the child stand upright with their hitting arm relaxed by their side, holding the racket with the head pointing down. If the racket reaches just above the ankle without touching the ground, it’s likely the right size.

Racket Size Guide by Height & Age

We've made it easy to choose the correct size—simply measure the child's height and refer to this guide:

  • Age 12+ (Over 5 ft 2 in.) → 27" (Full-size adult racket)

  • Age 10–12 (4 ft 8 in. – 5 ft 2 in.) → 26" racket

  • Age 8–10 (4 ft 4 in. – 4 ft 8 in.) → 25" racket

  • Age 6–8 (3 ft 11 in. – 4 ft 4 in.) → 23" racket

  • Age 6 and under (under 3 ft 11 in.) → 19–21" racket

  • Toddlers (Under 3 ft 5 in.) → 17" racket

These are general guidelines. If the racket drags on the ground when held upright, it’s too big. If it sits well above the ground, it may be too small. Physically stronger juniors may handle a slightly larger racket, while smaller players might benefit from sizing down.

Types of Junior Rackets

  • Graphite Rackets – Best for committed players who train regularly or take lessons. These offer the same performance and materials as adult rackets.

  • Composite Rackets – A mix of graphite and aluminium, offering a balance of performance and affordability.

  • Aluminium Rackets – Ideal for beginners or those on a budget. Lightweight and durable, perfect for casual or introductory play.

Choosing the right junior racket sets a solid foundation for a young player's development. It’s worth investing in the proper size and quality to ensure comfort, safety, and long-term improvement.
