Competition

Strathclyde Away

Our second Team Challenge event of the year was held this weekend on Saturday the 18th of November. The event on this occasion was held by the University of Strathclyde at Queen's Park Community Tennis Courts in which ourselves and Strathclyde participated - each team had 10 players over format that lasted three hours. The fixture was labelled as the 'East vs West Development Tie' and after Edinburgh's success in the last team challenge we had high hopes going into this tie to try and claim the 2017 clean sweep🙌🏻

Format;

  • 8 Minute Tie-Breakers
  • Teams of Three (two teams had four)
  • Best of Three Rubbers - One Singles, One Doubles, One Team Singles - Rotate Players Each Fixture
  • Each Team to Play Each (6 Teams Total, 5 Rotations)
  • One 'Powerpoint' per fixture worth five points!
  • Most Rubbers Overall Win!

Edinburgh arrived at the venue at 1230 on Saturday in what was the highly anticipated re-match from last year as East of Scotland yet again took on the West of Scotland. After the West prevailing multiple times in BUCS this year, it was our chance to show that the Development side of the club could balance the books. The event was organised organised by Calum Warwick of Strathclyde University and went without flaw. With no wind, no rain and no glaring sun - the conditions for tennis were PRIME! Over the course of the day Edinburgh took a commanding lead in the rubbers with Edinburgh 1's, 2's and 3's all being top of the leaderboard with some strong performances in the doubles. However, things all changed going into the last hour as Strathclyde starting upping their game and continued to grind out the results with the effectice use of the 'powerpoints' and some 'smashing' serving. By the end of the third hour the guys from 'Cambuslang' of Strathclyde trumped all competition by not losing a rubber in their final three fixtures, securing top spot and earning Strathclyde the city battle for the second year running. Will Edinburgh get redemption next year? We can only hope so after a miserable bus journey home only made slower by the Scotland vs New Zealand rugby traffic! #wegoagain

Congrats to Strathclyde and thanks to Calum Warwick for organising!
