On Sunday, 1st March, St. David's Day, with blustery conditions and a mix of bright sunshine followed by heavy sleet showers, Goodrich 'C'hasers were playing at home against Hallow 'B' in Division 5 West of the H & W Winter League. Despite the weather, there was plenty of support both from Goodrich members and Lydney ladies, who had just finished a coaching session and stayed to watch and lend their vocal support.
'C'hasers first pair, Kayla Coopey and Sue Russell, had a very tight first rubber against the Hallow first pair, winning the first set 6-4, then conceding the second set 2-6. With one set apiece and very little difference between the pairs it was no surprise the third set went to a tie-break which went the way of Hallow. On the other court 'C'hasers second pair, Carolyn Riddell and Ros Wadsworth, had an easier first rubber, winning it comfortably, 6-2 / 6-3.
Although it was all square on rubbers, Goodrich had the advantage of an extra set, and going into the second round this was to prove very valuable. This time Kayla and Sue, now playing the Hallow second pair, made light work of their second rubber, dropping just one game on their way to a 6-0 / 6-1 win. Carolyn and Ros, also had a tight match against the Hallow first pair and even though the first set went to a tie-break it went the way of Hallow, as did the second set, 2-6. Although the final score was two rubbers each, the 'C'hasers got the winning draw, as they had the extra set, 5 sets vs 4. 'C'hasers next match is on Sunday, 15th March, when they will again be at home, this time against Bodenham.
