LTA Youth programme

The Junior coaching programme covers coaching and competition activity. Membership at the club is not required, but does make the coaching sessions cheaper. For the young players taking their first steps in tennis, their confidence will grow as they progress through the stages. Their work on the court will help them to keep fit, healthy and happy, learning the fair play values of tennis as well – these encourage good behaviour and sportsmanship. Last but not least, they have FUN!

As you grow so the court and equipment will also grow. Red ball activity uses small courts similar in size to badminton courts and by the time you get to Green you will be playing on full size courts.

The tennis coaching programme is split into two sections:

  • Development courses are for players new to the game or who are developing their skills.
  • Team training is for those looking to play more regularly, playing competitions and in team matches for the club. These groups will sharpen you up for the match court. This is for those players who have mastered the basic shots and are looking to take their tennis to new hights.

Which course is for me?

Work on age groups initially. A child's age is based on how old they were on the 1st January. The coaches will identify anyone that needs to be in different groups. We aim to get players into the most appropriate group for them.

Blue - Tennis lessons for ages 4-5 (Pre/P1)

This is an introduction to tennis. Here, we’ll help kids improve their balance, agility and co-ordination while teaching them about the sport we love. At this stage it’s not about winning or losing, it’s just getting to grips with the basics.

Red - Tennis lessons for ages 6-8 (P2/P3, Born 2016 or later)

This will look a bit more like the tennis you know. You’ll see overarm serves, rallies, and volleys. Coaches will help children to further develop their co-ordination, balance, and speed. We’ll introduce relaxed competition here too.

Orange - Tennis lessons for ages 8-9 (P4/P5, Born  2015 or 2016)

Time to throw in some tactics, problem-solving, and guides to sportsmanship and leadership. At this stage children will know all of the rules and will be serving and returning in matches.

Green - Tennis lessons for ages 9-10 (P6/P7, Born 2014 or 2015)

This is the big one. It’s time for kids to play on full size courts. Now it’s all about growing their game by fine tuning and refining the techniques they’ve learned so far.

Yellow - Tennis lessons for ages 10+ (S1+, Born 2013 - 2006)

Moving onto a full yellow ball the sessions develop tactics, technique and movement. Players are encouraged to play competitively locally and in club teams.
