What is Mini Tennis?

Mini Tennis Video

Children aged between three and 10-years-old can get stuck into the world of tennis with this exciting programme from the LTA.

Featuring shorter courts, nets, rackets and soft, low-bouncing balls, Mini Tennis provides the perfect introduction to tennis for young children.

There are four stages of Mini Tennis; Tots, Red, Orange and Green – each with their own court size and ball-type. This tailored approach enables players to develop vital skills and techniques at an early age.

Mini Tennis Tots

Mini Tennis Tots is a programme specially designed for children aged three to five-years-old which enables them to learn the basics of tennis. It encourages them to enjoy the game through a series of fun activities based on the fundamental areas of balance, co-ordination, agility, movement and hand-eye coordination.

MINI TENNIS RED

Mini Tennis Red is a programme for players aged eight and under. Players learn to serve, rally and score with a slow ball, as well as learning the movement and coordination skills required for tennis. Players are encouraged to take part in fun competitions, both in teams and as individuals, with short matches using tie-break scoring.

Mini Tennis Orange

Mini Tennis Orange is a great way for players to continue their progress from Mini Tennis Red, and is aimed at players aged eight and nine. Players develop a more rounded game by learning a range of techniques and tactics. Courts are bigger and wider than the red stage, but still smaller than full-size tennis courts. There are team and individual competitions with matches using tie-break scoring.

Mini Tennis Green

Mini Tennis Green is a great way for players to continue their progress from Mini Tennis Orange, and is for children aged nine and 10. Players can now put their technique and skills into practice on a full size court with a faster ball which will help to develop all aspects of their game. There are also individual and team competitions, with scoring extended to short sets.

Junior Yellow Ball

From 11 yrs old your child will now play tennis with a regular yellow ball- the same ball used in senior tennis. From our experience the children really enjoy these sessions when there is a team element involved such as doubles or competing against each other in teams. They will also cover singles tactics and fun games such as “Dingles” and “Lob it” which is always a favourite amongst this age group!
