Overview

Nardini Cup competition is an extremely enjoyable series of competitive doubles tennis matches. Players will be matched to make the double parings as even as possible and there is a handicap system in place for the series to also ensure a level playing field. Although you play as a pair, the pairs will change for each match in the series. You score as a pair but you hold that score individually as your compete through the matches and rounds.  At the end of the 4 rounds your 3 best scores will be put forward to calculate your best overall score for the whole series.

  • Great for playing with and against players you may not normally meet.

  • Good social event.

  • Games are kept short, normally 20-25min then a rest break before your next round.

  • You will play 4 matches with different pairing during each round.

  • Entry is £3 for the whole series, to pay for balls.

  • Balls provided.

Nardini’s Cup

There will be 4 qualifying rounds of the Nardini’s Cup. Each round will be held on a Sunday from 12:45pm and lasting approx. 2 to 3 hours depending on numbers.  The qualifying dates are as follows:

12th May,  23rd June,  21st July,  11th Aug

A list of members playing will be available online, please check and contact Gordon McKinstry if there are any errors.

A one-off entry fee of £3.00 will be collected from each player at the first qualifying round they play in.

Only the top 3 results of each player will count towards the final placings. This will enable players who can’t commit to all 4 match dates to still have a chance to qualify for the final but also enable those who can play all 4 match dates to drop their lowest result.

Match Format & Rules:

  • A pre-determined schedule of matches will be arranged for play on the day.  The schedule of matches will be drawn at random, based on a system which ensures that everyone plays the same amount of matches and, in so far as possible, matches are either mixed doubles, men’s doubles or ladies’ doubles
  • Each match will last for a pre-determined amount of time (depending on numbers participating)
  • Each match will be played as a normal set.  Sudden death deuce will be played on the 2nd deuce. The receiving team to nominate who will receive the point in men’s and ladies doubles but in mixed doubles the sudden death point must be male server to male receiver or lady server to lady receiver
  • If the set is not concluded upon expiry of the time limit, the score is submitted as it lies at that point with only completed games counting eg. If it is 5-4 and 15-30 the score will be recorded as 5-4 in games completed
  • If a couple wins the set before the expiry of the time limit, the match ends
  • A results card will be available on the day to complete after each round
  • Balls will be provided at each qualifying round

Handicap system applies:

Game 1 – Pair A & Pair B both play off love

Game 2 – The pair that wins the first game will be -15 at the start of the 2nd game. This means that if Pair A won the first game then they must win one point to reach love. Pair B starts this game off love

Game 3 – If Pair A wins the 2nd game then they will be -30 at the start of the 3rd game. Pair A needs to win 2 points to reach love. Pair B starts off love. If Pair B wins the 2nd game then both pairs start the 3rd game from love. If Pair A wins the 3rd game then they remain at -30 as the score cannot exceed -30 in a game and Pair B remains off love

Game 4 – If Pair A is on -30 at the start of the 3rd game and Pair B wins the 3rd game then Pair A starts the 4th game on -15 and Pair B off love. If Pair B wins the 4th game then both Pair A and Pair B will start the 5th game off love

This format continues throughout the set or time.

No pair can ever have a positive score from winning a game eg. + 15

Participants will accrue points on the following basis:

1 point for each game won at a qualifying round

An up to date league table will be available online (showing aggregate scores for all qualifying rounds) after each event.

There will be a men’s winner and a ladies’ winner for the overall series

Winners will receive their trophy at a Prize Giving Buffet.
