Calderdale Match Night 6 - Two decisive matches

Liversedge A Queens A

There are eight teams in the top division this year with two teams to be relegated. After five out of fourteen fixtures Liversedge A were perilously above the relgation zone, in sixth place on 20 points with only Queens A (19 points) and Queens B (9 points) beneath them in the table.

The Livesedge A Queens A match was thus an early indicator of which team might avoid relegtion.

The team was made up of Andy Lucas and Barry Dennahy at first pair and Mark Oldroyd and Rohan Duffin (captain) at second pair. Andy and Barry breezed through the first set 6 - 1 before an excellent change of tactics from their opponents saw them pegged back 3-6 in the second. In the match tiebreak to ten points the Liversedge pair were 5-1 and 8-4 up before Andy Lucas saved a match point at 8 -9 down by hitting a framed volley winner, much to the frustration of their opponents. This was the pivotal turning point and the Liversedge pair prevailed 11 -9.

In a similarly tight encounter Mark and Rohan recovered from losing the first set  3-6 to overcome the second pair 3-6 6-2 10-8 in a match that lasted over an hour and a half.

After the rotation Andy and Barry were more comfortable winners 6-3 6-2 against the second pair despite one of their opponents hitting a purple patch which meant they lost 11 straight points between being 5 - 1 up and facing forty love against at 5 - 3 before turning the game and winning the set.

Captain Rohan Duffin admitted feeling a little tight after racing to a 6-1 4-2 lead in their second match which thereafter became a rollercoaster. The Liversedge pair ended up being victorious 6-1 5-7 10-5.

The final match score was Liversedge A 8 Queens A 3 which was an excellent win.

Park B Liversedge B

The second team did not get off to the best of starts by arriving at the wrong location.

Some nights it just isn't your night and the Liversedge team of David Watson and Hylton Idle and Hellmut Maack and Richard Ellis (Captain) struggled throughout. David and Hylton lost their rubbers 3-6 4-6 and 5-7 0 -3 (retired) respectively and Richard and Hellmut lost their rubbers 7-5 4-6 5-10  and 2-6 0-6.

It is important that the team bounce back next week to continue their push for promotion to division three.

The final match score wasPark B 8 Liversedge B 1 .
