After months of fierce but friendly competition in the Club championships, Meads LTC held a hugely successful Finals Day on Sunday. Play had to be suspended for three hours in the middle of the day as heavy rain fell but the club still managed to complete eight of the scheduled ten categories.
Jonathan Scriven successfully defended his singles title defeating Peter Bray in two sets whilst a new ladies singles champion was crowned as Emma beat Polly McCarthy in straight sets after a very tight first set tie break. Jonathan Scriven and his singles opponent Peter Bray teamed up to take on Chris Rummins and Jung Tadsee in the men's doubles final which produced some high quality tennis before Rummins and Tadsee emerged victorious.
The ladies doubles final saw Mars Schellevis and Polly McCarthy-Williams take on Lucy Parkin and Sarah King-Spooner in a long and entertaining encounter with Schellevis and McCarthy-Williams eventually taking the title. The ladies doubles veterans trophy was won by Brigid Argyle and Sue Boakes who defeated Clare Greenwell and Lorna Holloway in straight sets whilst the men's veterans doubles produced the longest match of the day as Kevin Boakes and Chris Kilroy squeezed past John Haining and Nick Price in front of a large crowd of supporters. Haining and Price fought back from a set and 3-1 down to take the match all the way to a tense championship tie break before the Kilroy and Boakes combination prevailed 10-8.
The Plate trophy was won by Simon Gisby and Carol Robson who defeated Peter Turvey and Patrick Horsfield in another match with a thrilling championship tie break conclusion. The ladies vets singles was won by Clare Greenwell with Wendy Lambert as runner up and in the men's vets category John Kulenicz defeated Mike Dixon.
The tournament was once again generously sponsored by Estate Agents Leaper Stanbrook and the club was delighted to welcome their representative, Ethan Hunter who kindly presented the trophies.
