Singles Ladder Rules

What is a tennis ladder system?

A tennis ladder works like a league table. Players are ranked based on their ability and once the ladder begins will be able to challenge each other. Players battle their way to the top by challenging players above them in the rankings. If they win, they will trade places with their opponent in the ranking table. The beauty of a tennis ladder is that it allows players of a similar ability to challenge one another and also challenge better players as they improve and move up the rankings.

How will it work and what are the rules?

When entering the ladder you will be added to the appropriate ladder whatsapp group. It is up to the challenger to make contact with their opponent. You may challenge anyone else on the ladder, up to and including 3 places above you.

The initial ranking of the players have been set up based on previous results in the last box leagues, league and the tournament.

New players can join the ladder at any moment. When you join the ladder, you may challenge any player within the bottom 80% of the ladder as your first challenge. However choose carefully whomever you challenge as this is a unique opportunity. If you lose your first match you will then unfortunately start at the bottom of the ladder. (This only includes players who sign up after the sign up date)

A player who is challenged must agree to a match with the challenger no later than two weeks after the challenge has been made unless:

a. The challenged player already has 2 other matches to play

b. The challenged player is unable to play due to injury, holiday etc.

c. The two players cannot mutually agree on a date and time for a match.

It is the responsibility of the winner of the match to report the score to the league administrator on whatsapp. Jon Lawson is the current administrator.

You cannot challenge the same player within a month of the last challenge

POSITIONS ON THE LADDER FOLLOWING COMPLETION OF A MATCH CHANGE AS FOLLOWS:

a. If the winner has the higher position , there is no change.

b. If the winner has the lower position, he or she takes over the higher position. The loser and all others below the winner move down one position. The calculation is based on the position of the two players when the match is recorded, not those at the time the challenge is made. It’s not unusual to find the positions of the players have changed during that interval. Please observe good sportsmanship and play your match even if you find your respective positions have changed.

Beware, this means if you are injured and cannot play or simply decide to have a rest and not challenge anyone or play a match for a while, you will find yourself slipping down the table as matches go on around you.

MATCHES:

The first person to 8 games wins the match. If it is 7-7, a Championship tie break will be played to determine the winner (First to 10 by 2 clear points).

Singles matches can now be arranged during Men's night on a Monday and Women’s night on a Tuesday, but only if :

  • there is court availability (courts cannot be booked)
  • It does not result in other members not having playing partners for normal doubles play.
  • So matches do not impact on others our preference is that matches are played early e.g to finish by 6.30pm, or late e.g at 8pm. We are looking for a sensible approach and consideration of others to make this work.
