CC 2024

Seldom does an event which has been so overhyped in advance then turn out to be even better than expected. When writing the nonsense that usually litters these pages we do so with tongue firmly in cheek. However Finals Day 2024 actually did turn out to be the dazzling exhibition of skill and stamina that we promised. The quality of play really did seem within touching distance of the elite level of British tennis. Every player on court performed brilliantly and all the matches were enjoyed by an appreciative audience.

The winners and runners-up are pictured here in order of presentation.

The inaugural Men's Vase competition was won by Alfie Reid against Dom Owens. A match so closely contested that it appears Dom was still trying to get the trophy out of his hands as this picture was taken.

The Ladies Singles was won by Briony Heljula seen here receiving the trophy from Club President Peter Rogan alongside runner-up Daciana Ionescu.

The Men's Plate was won by Mike Walsh in an epic battle with Club Chairman Ed Harrison.

Another epic in the Ladies Doubles saw Briony Heljula and Lucy Hartley (centred) win a 10-point tiebreak over Cath Coughlan and Kate Heljula.

More high-quality, all-action doubles play in the Men's final as Tony Heljula and Keith Robinson come out on top over Josh Elsdon and Mike Walsh.

Awesome performances from both players in Men's Singles final had the crowd on their feet as Tony Heljula won out over Alfie Reid.

And another belter in the Mixed Doubles where Briony Heljula and Mike Walsh were victorious over Kate Heljula and Chris Howard.

All in all an excellent day. The weather could have better but it was dry enough to get all the finals played. An outcome which seemed unlikely for most of the day. Many thanks to everyone who helped make it all work. Catering was organised and provided by committee members Gill Reeves, Lucy Hartley, Jim Hancock and Fay Fernades. Thanks to Colin Caygill for the immaculately brushed courts and freshly painted net posts. Many thanks to all the umpires, Mark Bamford, Chris Howard, Jamie Glasper, Ed Harrison and Fay Fernandes. You're great!
Thanks to Stuart, Derek and Gill for advice and guidance and to the rest of the committee for moral support.
Thank you to everyone who turned out to watch. I'm sure it was worth the entrance fee. And thanks to everyone who entered and played in the competitions. Without you there would be no point. A huge thanks to all the players on Finals Day for your cooperation and patience. The true stars of a tennis competition were where they should be. On the tennis court.
