Millennium Cup Final Winners 2024

On Sunday 7 July, we hosted Millennium Cup Final vs Woodfield Grove and brought the crystal vase home!
An overcast and windy day kicked off with games in all 3 Ladies categories and a Mixed Doubles match.

In Ladies Vets category, Helen D dazzled WGTC captain in straight sets 6-2 6-0.

Natasha A had a rematch in Ladies Singles category however could not find the tennis that brought her victory last month and ended up losing 1-6 2-6.

In Mixed Doubles, Carole W and Henry P dropped the first set 4-6, equalised in the second 6-4 but had a very close loss on the championship tie break 8-10.

In Ladies Doubles, captains Gabi & Ellie dropped the opening set 5-7, quickly recovered in the second 6-1, but the fortune was on the opposition's side when the ball hit the net, landed short and decided the championship tie break 8-10.

The opportunity for Norbury to equalise the scores was denied with an overall result 1:3 by lunchtime, so then it was down to Mens Singles, Vets and Juniors to rescue the day.

In Mens Vets, Vlad G continued his winning streak and trashed the opposition with 6-0 6-2.

In Juniors, Alex N's star continued to rise with 6-0 6-2 victory over the fellow youngster, and Antonia W-B played a rematch and demonstrated impressive resilience taking the opponent to a tie break in the first set, and then to the championship tie break but losing overall 6-7 6-3 3-10.

In Men's Singles, Kelvin G-D played a tough match against a very fast and energetic opponent sealing the victory on a championship tie break 6-3 2-6 10-7, and bringing the total score for the day to 4:4!

The squad put Andy G & Paul W under pressure to play a decider in Mens Doubles....they took the first set 6-3 but were falling behind in the second taking the cheering crowd to the edge of their seats... The match was paused due to rain, and Andy and Paul used this break to reset and regain focus and ultimately won the second set on a thrilling tie break, sealing an overall 5:4 victory for Norbury!

Millennium Cup contest has been absolutely fantastic! We express our gratitude to everyone who supported, shared wisdom and experience, cooked food and documented the events!
